We all know what happened between Monaco, Chelsea and Everton for Folarin Balogun and Lamine Camara by now right? Everton tried and failed to get Balogun, Chelsea agreed a move for Camara, only for Everton to come back and negotiate a cheaper deal for Balogun that resulted in the French club pulling the plug on the Camara deal - this was all topped off by Balogun refusing to sign for Everton despite a deal being in place.

Now, just two days after the deadline, the early positive mood at Stamford Bridge has taken another hit, after news leaked that Brazilian starboy Willian Estevao is allegedly not happy with his role in the side.

The Burden of Enormous Potential

If anyone tuned into Chelsea 3-0 Barcelona last season, you’ll know exactly what Estevao is capable of - the teenager netted an absolute beauty, turning Pau Cubarsi inside out in the process, and every time he received the ball, it felt as if he was going to make something happen.

The issue, though, has been permanence - the Brazilian announced himself with a last-gasp winner in the Premier League against Liverpool, made himself a household name against Barca, and then, for one reason or another, dropped off the face of the earth.

In fairness, two hamstring injuries, a separate muscle injury, and two other bouts of illness will do that to a player - if you can’t play, then you can’t play. However, by missing 17 different games last season, Chelsea had to figure out a way to play without him, and thanks to their other summer transfer business, the former Palmeiras winger seems to have gone from future star to forgotten man.

The right-sided forward has failed to start either of Chelsea’s league games this season, coming on for just 7 minutes in their win over Fulham, though he did start Chelsea’s 2-0 cup triumph over Luton, forcing the own goal for Chelsea’s second.

This is perfectly understandable - Estevao has just returned from a bad hamstring injury, and with Moises Caicedo already feeling the effects of being rushed back from injury to soon, it is clear that Alonso doesn’t want to do the same to one of the most promising attackers of this generation - it is quite possible that these rumours are just that: rumours.

However, it is clear though that Estevao does not want to be a cup player and league rotation option - the boy wants to be a star, and has all the tools to do it. It just seems that right now, with the likes of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and even Pedro Neto all ahead of him in the pecking order, there is little window for the youngster to work towards that.

Worrying Rumours

First reported by ESPN Brazil’s Renato Senise, it is alleged that Estevao has told those close to him that he believes he won’t get so many chances under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso.

In Senise’s words, “The Brazilian prefers playing centrally and does not want to compete with Pedro Neto on the wings, where he will be expected to add more muscle - something he believes could affect his mobility and compromise his style.”

“Estevao remains happy at Chelsea and wants to continue at the club. However, if his opportunities are limited, a January move could become a possibility.”

Estevao is so good with the ball at his feet that it’s hard to believe that he is not a first team regular. The resurgence of Palmer and the £117 million signing of Rogers from Villa is largely to blame for keeping him out of the squad right now, but that doesn’t mean there will be limited opportunities.

If anything, having a different profile that can rotate with the likes of Neto, Palestra and Hato at wing-back could be exactly what Xabi Alonso needs to keep his side unpredictable, and what Estevao needs to develop as a player.

Though it is natural for a player of the Brazilian’s quality to be desperate for more minutes, it must be remembered that he is still a teenager, and still in the developmental phase of his career.

What he cannot do is expect the manager to fit him into the system regardless - instead, he needs to make it impossible for Alonso to leave him out.
