At the start of the transfer window, with new coach Liam Rosenior at the helm, it was widely reported that Chelsea were set to sign a centre-back, a move that has been needed in West London for multiple seasons now.
However, with primary target Jeremy Jacquet hijacked by Liverpool, the Blues have now been forced to set their sights elsewhere. However, it seems that Chelsea have settled on another young Frenchman, as, according to L’Equipe, Tylel Tati is the newest youngster linked to Stamford Bridge.
Having turned 18 just two weeks ago, Tati fits perfectly with Chelsea’s transfer strategy - young, full of potential, and likely to have high value further down the line in the event that the club needs or wants to sell him.
Currently midway through his first season of senior football at Ligue 1 side Nantes, Tati has gained plenty of admirers for his positive brand of defending, excellence in playing out from the back and clever positioning.
Moreover, he is a left-sided centre back, a position in which Chelsea have desperately required squad depth since the start of the season thanks to Levi Colwill’s ACL injury, which has ruled him out until at least April.

However, we have seen this movie before—Chelsea acquire a young centre back, and before he even has a chance to get used to his new surroundings, he is sent out to sister club Strasbourg in order to build his first-team experience.
It is a useful system, and we may be about to see the process come full circle after Mamadou Sarr’s recall from the French club, but this could also be a false dawn, with Sarr potentially brought back to be nothing more than a benchwarmer in the event of an emergency.
However, Newcastle have also shown interest in the youngster, indicating that Chelsea’s faith is well-placed, and with a value of £15 million right now, Tati could see that number increase fivefold if all goes to plan and his move to Chelsea is confirmed.
