Chris Wilder Receives BIZARRE Red Card Amidst Continual Horror Show

With only three Championship goals to their collective names this season, the prospect of someone on the pitch for Sheffield United striking through the heart of a ball and expertly picking out his target with power and precision is probably a more-than-welcome thought for Blades fans.

Unfortunately, however, it wasn't Danny Ings who pulled it off, and obviously it wasn't Tom Cannon, and it also wasn't Gustavo Hamer (who is generally too busy looking at flights to... literally anywhere but Sheffield United).

No, it wasn't a player who finally figured out how to hit the target this season, it was their manager. And, to compund the frustration, the target wasn't the back of the net (not like it ever looks to be the target in this Sheffield United team), it was instead a home fan in the crowd at Bramall Lane.

With the precision of a sniper, the power of a Mustang and the grace of a fridge-freezer, the 58-year-old manager hoofed a stray ball that made the mistake of going near him directly onto the head of an unfortunate Blades fan in the nearby crowd.

Wilder, initially stunned at the fact that someone involved at Sheffield United knew how to shoot, immediately made his way over to the gentlemen to apologise, before referee Adam Herczeg brandished a straight red card that may carry the implication of a three-game ban for Wilder. One game for every time The Blades have come crawling back to him to manage the club (with varying levels of success).

Wilder Red Compounds Dull Blades' Misery

The catch of this story is the fact that Sheffield United, for only the second time this season, were actually leading a football match.

We've all been there, in fairness. The god-given gift of the Year 7's ball rolling towards you as a Year 11, before powering through it like prime Roberto Carlos to send it into the stratosphere, as the Year 11's likely did to you at some point in the past. Sometimes, it just sits up far too nicely for you to not smash it away.

Whether it was that cathartic feeling of sending a bit of leather to the moon with a well-placed strike, or the sheer shock that Sheffield United were actually, mercifully winning a game for once, the decision by Wilder to blast the ball into the stands is one that stands as confusing in many regards.

There were a few interesting referee decisions that may have sparked some emotion from the Sheffield United boss - Japhet Tanganga and goal-scorer (yes, Sheffield United have those) Tyrese Campbell both being put in the book for arguing - but the ball was only ever going to go one way upon Wilder powering up his shot. That, being directly into the crowd of home support who were, for once, happy with the half of football they had just witnessed.

But, alas, up stepped Wilder with the grace of one David Beckham to whip the ball squarely onto the face of one of his supporters. And now he looks set to receive a three-game ban for his actions.

Without Wilder in the dugout, Ross Stewart sought inspiration from the Blades manager's fine shooting form, sticking home two goals in seven minutes just before the hour mark to turn the score around to Southampton's favour. Sheffield United were unable to muster up anything to re-threaten The Saints for the remaining time in the game, and Will Still's men picked up a resounding three points.
