Colorado Rapids set to break their transfer record

Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids are poised to break their transfer record, with the American side in talks with Championship outfit Middlesbrough per Tom Bogart of The Athletic.

Morgan Whittaker, signed just two Januarys ago from Plymouth Argyle, has excelled at the North-East side, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists last season. The English midfielder was signed for an original fee of £7 million and is expected to be sold for a fee in the double figures.

The 25-year-old is expected to undergo a medical today in London before finalising the deal, with the MLS window closing on Wednesday evening, a little over a day after the English window closes.

If the medical is successful and the two sides can reach an agreement on the price, Whittaker will join up with coach Matt Wells, with the English manager having already coached 25 games in the United States.

With money to spend after the team transferred centre-back Lucas Herrington to Hull City this summer for an initial fee of $17 million (approximately £12.5 million), one of the largest in MLS history, it is likely that they will look to splash the cash on the Middlesbrough midfielder.

Across the season so far, Colorado Rapids have impressed but lacked firepower in attack. Joint-sixth for fewest goals conceded (28) across the two divisions, the Rapids sit seventh in the Western Conference, currently occupying the final spot for the knockout rounds of the MLS Cup.

Whittaker’s possible new side has lost just one league game—the least across the two divisions—but has been held to 11 draws, the most.

Wells and the Rapids fans will be hoping that the English midfielder can add some much-needed firepower to the attack as they look to reach the latter rounds of the cup for the first time since 2021.
