A Scintillating Display From the Seagulls As They Climb to Fourth

Well, where do I start with this performance? We had the clubs youngest talents shining once again as well as 34 year old Lewis Dunk knuckleballing a 30 yard effort into the top corner. Brighton now rise to fourth in the table having won twice, drawn once and lost once to kick off the new Premier League season.

The stats to list how incredible this season has started is nothing short of extraordinary. Brighton have the most goals, highest average possession, highest expected goals and most big chances created in the League. All why’ll having as many as TEN first team players out injured. If things continue how they’ve started we are in for an incredibly exciting season.

Coventry vs Brighton as it Happened

The game started as you’d expect, Brighton maintaining complete dominance in possession and dictating the play. Which lead to an early chance for Diego Gomez who couldn’t find the target from inside the box. The Seagulls kept piling on the pressure as they had the first seven shots in the game, Babis Kostoulas having the best of the lot. The Greek found himself in a similar but better area to Gomez’s chance but similarly to the Paraguayans effort, Kostoulas could only drag it wide.

Coventry then grew and grew into the game and without a doubt should of found the back of the net at least once. If it wasn’t for super Bart Verbruggen they probably would of. Jack Rudoni had the best of the lot for the hosts as his shot forced a superb one handed diving save from the Netherlands number one. Brighton survived corner after long throw after corner after long throw before Kostoulas brilliantly created room for himself inside the Coventry box and drilled his effort past a helpless Carl Rushworth.

Half time score – Coventry 0-1 Brighton

As the second half kicked off Coventry could of easily scored in a matter of seconds alas Ephron Mason-Clark’s effort was very tame and straight at Verbruggen. Then five minutes later Malick Yalcouye brilliantly got passed two defenders to put himself through in on goal, faced with Rushworth he calmly slotted it past the Englishman. That’s now two in his last three games.

It went from bad to worse for the hosts as Taiwo Awoniyi saw red for an elbow on Maxim De Cuyper, just two minutes after going two goals down, a real killer which deflated the home crowd.

The Seagulls would extend their advantage on the 70th minute mark from the penalty spot. Kostoulas getting caught in the box by Bobby Thomas. Pascal made no mistake and cooly placed it into the bottom right corner as Rushworth remained rooted to the ground.

Then on the 83rd minute we witnessed the Premier League Goal of the Month, Brighton’s goal of the month and potentially the Premier League Goal of the Season, who knows, maybe even a Puskas Award winner. Lewis Dunk from 30/35 yards out let fly. And let fly he did, the ball swirling and dipping its way into the top left corner past a helpless Rushworth. I don’t think anyone could believe what they just saw, hands on heads from the away fans as well as players on the pitch.

With the game all won Yasin Ayari got in on the act as Gross (who registered his 50th Premier League assist) laid it off to the Swede and the ex-Coventry loanee perfectly passed it into the bottom right corner to seal a five star Brighton performance.

Coventry vs Brighton Man of the Match

A toss up between Verbruggen and Gross but Gross edges it for me. At 35 years old you think maybe he’s slowing down but no, in fact he gets better. Definitely one of his best ever games in a Brighton shirt. Registering a goal and two assists which now puts him on 50 Premier League assists. Just Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and KDB having more since Gross’ first season in the Prem. It just shows the shear levels this guy plays at.
