Crystal Palace v Manchester United | Match Preview

30/04/24 19:34

Selhurst Park plays host to Monday night football this week as Crystal Palace face Manchester United with both sides looking to end the season as strongly as possible.

Palace, currently sat 14th in the Premier League with 40 points, are now destined for a mid table finish. Far enough away from the relegation zone to not worry but also not too close to the top half either - Palace are pretty set. However they will come into this game hoping to end the season in the best possible way and picking up a result against Man United will certainly do that.

Alternatively, United currently sit in 6th place. Currently sitting six points away from European football the Red Devils will need a win here if they are to guarantee a place in Europe come the end of the season.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United Stats

In their last game, The Eagles faced Fulham at Craven Cottage. Heroics from Jeffrey Schlupp meant they took away a point from a game where the hosts dominated the play.

Significantly the draw means that Palace are unbeaten in their last four games, picking up wins against Newcastle, West Ham and Liverpool along the way.

Erik Ten Hag’s side on the other hand also came away with a point from their last game having drawn 1-1 with Burnley at Old Trafford. This a disappointing result considering they were hosting a relegation threatened side. Despite dominating the game United couldn’t get the win, something that has happened far too often this season.

The result also means that United have only managed one win in their last six Premier League fixtures. A concerning stat for their European hopes.

Going forward Palace have, at times, struggled to make an impact this year. They have managed just 45 goals all season. However, it is their defensive record, especially since the arrival of manager Oliver Glasner, that they will be most proud of.

They have conceded just three goals in their last five games and this season overall have kept eight clean sheets - the same amount as this weekend's opponents Manchester United. An impressive achievement for a mid table side this year.

Palace will certainly feel as though they can get at United as well. The Red Devils have conceded 51 goals this season and have struggled to score at times themselves scoring 52 goals this year.

History suggests that United should be confident in this game though. The two sides have met 65 times in their histories with Man United winning on 41 occasions. In fact, if previous games are anything to go off, there is actually more chance of a draw than a Palace win. The sides have drawn 13 times whereas Crystal Palace have only managed 11 wins.

Despite that the last time the two sides met earlier this season it was Palace who came away with all three points. A Joachim Anderson goal, the only thing that separated the two teams.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United Players To Watch

French striker Jean-Phillippe Mateta has been on fire for Palace this season. With 11 goals and Four assists to his name he is normally the one to have an effect for The Eagles. Significantly, he has found the net four times in his last three games as well so if anyone is going to make a difference in this game it will be him.

United’s captain Bruno Fernandes is also on hot form at the moment in front of goal. In his last six games he has seven goals including some goals of great significance having saved United during desperate times recently. Fighting for the club on every given occasion, Fernandes is the man to look out for in this one.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United Team News

For Glasner’s side other than the injuries that are keeping players out for the remainder of the season there are no concerns. Sam Johnstone, Cheick Doucoure, Rob Holding and Matheus Franca all missing out.

There is some positive news for their fans though with Marc Guehi and Jefferson Lerma looking as though they could make their comebacks in this game.

Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Willy Kambwala are all confirmed to be out for the rest of the season for Man United. As well as them it looks as though Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial will remain out as well.

However, there have been boosts to a few players in the United camp. Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford all could come back into the starting eleven this week.
