Reports suggest that Derby County are close to a surprising move for Southampton’s Ben Brereton Diaz, as the Rams look to make an explosive end to the summer transfer window.

Suffering a winless start to the league season, losing three and drawing one, it has quickly become clear that John Eustaces’ side requires more firepower despite the signings of Patrick Agyemang and Carlton Morris, which has led them to proven Championship goalscorer Brereton Diaz.

The Chilean, who has played for Villarreal, Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, boasts 73 senior goals, including seven for his national team, notched seven goal contributions in 17 Championship games last season.

Is Diaz a Good Choice?

While there is no doubting Brereton Diaz’ credentials, there is no doubt that he has slowed down in recent seasons. Many remember him by his stellar 2021/22 season at Blackburn, where he netted 22 times in just 39 games, while at the same time choosing to represent Chile instead of England noticing his half nationality of the former on Football Manager.

However, in the last three seasons, he has scored just 10 goals combined, and consequently, Southampton are starting to look elsewhere for more reliable striking options.

Yet for the Rams’, this is a serious market possibility here - if they can bring in Diaz, they would have four, high-class striking options, which with Eustace at the helm, would change often in order to keep opponents guessing. If he can re-discover the form of three years ago, Diaz could be a serious weapon in Derby’s arsenal.
