Pre-Match Buildup

With Celtic, Hearts, Rangers, Motherwell and Hibernian all pulling out of this weekend's Premiership fixtures due to wanting to focus on their second-legs in Europe, the Premiership's fixture schedule became decimated. But one fixture remained, and just so happened to be the game of the weekend in the top-flight. The Dundee Derby always attracts those who love and are interested in Scottish Football, with the rivalry being not only the closest city derby in Scotland but in the UK with only around 183 metres separating United's Tannadice Park and Dundee's Dens Park.

Both teams came into the game having been knocked out of the Premier Sports Cup last weekend but their early league form and performances would show that Dundee have a lot to be happy with so far, after a postive display at Celtic Park in the opening weekend and their home victory against Aberdeen in their last Premiership match. Although they have been dealt a hammer blow with club captain, and boyhood Dundee fan, Simon Murray out for a significant period of time having picked up a ACL injury in their defeat to Aberdeen last weekend.

United came into the first Dundee derby having lost both their games 4-0, to Hearts at Tynecastle and at home to Celtic last weekend, and were without a Premiership win so far this season.

First-Half

One of the traditions of the Dundee Derby is that the away side will have a pre-match team talk and meeting at their own stadium before making a short walk down to the opposing stadium. In this weekend's case it was Dundee who left Dens to head to Tannadice and get ready for the kick-off.

Dundee started the match brighter and the game's first attempts; the first came when Alan Forrest sprinted down the left hand side but was blocked and cleared by Vicko Sevelj but the clearance went as far to the onrushing Idris Odutayo who set up Charlie Reilly, who tried his luck in front of goal, but his curling effort went over and dipped just after going over the crossbar. And six minutes later; Owen Bevan setup Forrest who was breaking down the left and the former Hearts attacked teed up Joe Westley who had time to turn and face goal and try his luck but his effort just went past Jack Walton's lefthand post.

United's first effort at goal came in the 28th minute when Sevelj met the delivery of Mehdi Merghem's corner but was denied when Dundee keeper, Owen Goodman, pushed away the Croatian's effort. And Dundee defender Ryan Astley was needed to keep the game level after Merghem played in Idjessi Metsoko who tried his luck but was denied by Astley.

With half-time approaching United were made to pay after Abdoulaye Yoro tried to play in Will Ferry down the left-hand side but his pass was loose and seized by Drey Wright who took the ball on a run and the full-back decided to try his luck in front of goal, from around 20 yards out, and his powerful shot found the bottom right-hand corner and past Walton. The dark blue side of Dundee a goal up heading to half-time to the delight of the Dundee fans.

Second-Half

Yoro had an immediate attempt to make amends just after half-time; United captain Dylan Tait playing in the Ivory Coast international but his effort was saved by Goodman's feet and cleared away for a United throw-in.

And United found themselves further behind 12 minutes after the restart; a Fin Robertson corner-kick was the home side's undoing with the ball making it's way to the back-post which found the head of Astley and was headed away by Bert Esselink as far out to the onrushing Forrest and Owen Bevan managed to divert the ball over the line and past Walton for Dundee's second goal.

And it could have been more for Steven Pressley's side; Forrest's cross into the United penalty box was met by Westley and his effort was cleared by Sevelj as far out to Ethan Hamilton and the Dundee midfielder seen his effort blocked by Esselink and eventually United managed to see out the danger.

United upped the pressure the longer the second-half went on and on; Zac Sapsford was played in and effort was deflected by Astley and Lauchie Rose was unable to convert the ball past Goodman. Rose then went ahead of Astley, but the defender stayed with the Australian and kept the pressure up and his shot went past Goodman but past the post and out for a goalkick. And Neil Farrguia had the last chance of the game for United but his effort again went past Goodman and out for a goalkick.

Full-Time Thoughts and Reaction

It was a delightful day for Dundee at Tannadice, their third win at United's home in the last four visits and keeps the good momentum for Steven Pressley's side and they found themselves in second place in the Premiership table after three games played. They'll be hoping for more when Hibernian come to Dens Park next Sunday afternoon.

As for United they find themselves out of the Premier Sports Cup, no goals scored now in their last three games and conceded ten goals in that time and still without a Premiership win this campaign. Lots of time for change and for reaction but it's not good reading for Jim Goodwin but they'll be hoping for better when United travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock on Saturday.
