Eddie Howe has taken the decision to quit as manager of Newcastle United with immediate effect, despite being just weeks away from the beginning of the new season.

The breaking news was quickly spread by multple leading sources both worldwide and specialising with the Tyneside club, confirming Howe's decision to leave the club after five years in the dugout at St. James Park, which saw two qualificaitons for the UEFA Champions League and the club's first major honour in over 50 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup, where Newcastle defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley in the final.

The news of Howe's departure comes after what has so far been another tough transfer window for the Magpies after a disapointing campagin. Last summer saw the club miss out on multiple top targets such as Hugo Ekitike, James Trafford and Benjamin Sesko, as well as losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool. And whilst big money was spend by the club on Yoanne Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey, those signings failed to have the desired impact. With Wissa, Woltemade and Elanga scoring just 17 goals combined in all competitions, despite the three forwards costing a combined transfer fee of over £160 million.

Newcastle's poor form of the club's new signings led to a drop-off in the Premier League, with the club slipping into the bottom half with a 12th place finish, losing 17 out of the 38 league matches, the same amount as 17th place Tottenham Hotspur. And worst of all for Toon supporters, they were also defeated home and away to local rivals Sunderland, who finished above the Magpies despite only just being promoted to the top flight.

And so far this summer window has seen little room for more positivity on Tyneside. With star players Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon sold to Tottenham and FC Barcelona respecitly, and whilst the two sales brought in a combined £150 million, so far not much has been done to replace the quality of those two players.

Newcastle have, once more, seen themselves miss out on key targets. Spanish winger Víctor Muñoz was the Magpies chosen replacement for Gordon, however a move was hijacked late by Liverpool with Munoz now signed with the Anfield club. And it was a similar story with Swiss midfielder ohan Manzambi, the 20 year-iold starred at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Newcastle agreed a fee with Freiburg to take the midfielder to Tyneside, however Aston Villa swopped in late, matched the fee and Manzambi chose to move to Villa Park instead.

And if rumours are to be believed, the sales of key players will not stop at Tonali and Gordon, with strong reports suggesting club captain Bruno Guimaraes could be on his way soon to Arsenal, with talks intensifying over a move of the 28 year-old Brazilian to the Premier League champions.

Prior to the announcement of his departure, Howe admitted that Guimares could leave the club, as well as stating that he was not firmly in control of the situation surrounding the midfielder, with speculation circling that the Brazilian's potentially imminent departure from the club, and his lack of power and involvement in the situation, has fueled his decision to leave.

Guimaraes is the club captain, a modern day Toon icon and adored by the supporters, and was the club's highest goal contributor of goals and assists last season from the heart of midfield, losing him would be a disaster for the club in what is turning out to be a bleak summer.

Whilst chaos erupts off the pitch at Newcastle, action on the pitch in recent weeks has also left little room for optimism, with Newcastle suffering a 4-1 defeat to EFL Championship side Bristol City in their latest pre-season test. And with Newcastle now in need of a new man at the helm, times are looking tough ahead of the new season on Tyneside.

Who Will Replace Howe?

The timing of Howe's decision to depart leaves Newcastle with little option but to move as swiftly as possible to replace him with a new face in the dugout.

And it appears that they have their preferred choice lined up, in the form of Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli's coach Matthias Jaissle.

Jaissle, despite being just 38, has proven himself as a winner in multple countries, however has never managed in one of Europe's big five leagues.

The German was the manager of RB Salzburg in Austria, and led the side to two Austrian top flight titles between 2021 and 2023, before moving to Saudi Arabia to take on the job at Al Ahli.

There, with a side spearheaded by stars brought from Europe such as Ivan Toney, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez, Jaissle led the club to win back-to-back AFC Champions League, becoming he first team to be champions of Asia for consecutive years since fellow Saudi side Al-Ittihad in 2005.

Jaissle is a coach that favours a front-footed, aggressive pressing style who also uses the ball to great effect and purpose, looking to move the ball quickly in transition to overload opponents and create fast-paced counter-attacking moves.

A move to bring the German coach to Newcastle is reportbely close, with the 38 year-old set to join up with the Newcastle squad in Spain as part of their pre-season preperations.
