Haaland Ready for Move

Manchester City star Erling Haaland could leave the club following the Citizen's punishment for their 114 guilty charges related to breaches of the Premier League's financial rules.

The league confirmed the guilty verdict this week, noting that “Manchester City failed to accurately report its income and expenditure for the purposes of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules and UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Rules” in a stern statement - notable for using the word "sham" five times. Stellar work.

It leaves the future of the Citizens in doubt – with Erling Haaland, in particular, the highest-profile star who could well push for an exit.

Haaland Set to Set Sail for Barca

As per Football Insider, it has been deemed as "inconceivable" for the Norwegian superstar to stay put at the Etihad Stadium, if they are to be forcibly relegated from the Premier League as part of their punishment.

Haaland has scored a mammoth 117 goals in 137 games for the Sky Blues since joining from in 2022 from Borussia Dortmund, whilst winning two league titles and a Champions League amidst a healthy trophy haul. But Barcelona have already held talks with him in the past over a move to Catalonia.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo have previously claimed that Barca intended to sign the world-class striker to replace outgoing veteran Robert Lewandowski, opening talks with then-agent, the late Mino Raiola, in April 2021.

According to the report, Haaland was “very excited” to join the club and indicated he would be happy to sign for the Blaugrauna in 2022.

“In fact, in March 2022, [then-manager] Xavi Hernandez travelled to Munich to meet with him in person and finish explaining the project,” the report notes, adding, “However, the Norwegian said ‘yes’ to Barça for the following season” – meaning that he would have joined in 2023.

Another Spanish outlet has insisted since then that Haaland would prioritise a move to Barcelona. Such a move would line the 26-year-old forward against his rival for the tag of the world's best player - Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe - in El Clasico fixtures.

However, whether or not Barcelona look to explore a deal still remains to be seen. The Catalan heavyweights refused to cough up a large sum for Haaland's former City team-mate, Julian Alvarez, with the club seemingly seeing no need to invest in their attack. That position hasn't changed, especially with the re-birth of Raphinha as the club's starting number nine, who has already scored 12 goals this season.

But it's plain to say that Haaland is a very different idea altogether, and having a clear-cut chance to sign one of the best players on the planet is not one that president Joan Laporte is likely to willingly miss out on.

With City faced with the potential need to sell their best player, it is believed that Barcelona would be right at the front of the line with the likes of PSG, Bayern Munich and Premier League title rivals Arsenal for the striking star.

According to Transfermarkt, the Norwegian is valued at a huge €220 million.
