Ethan Mbappé Nears Ligue 1 Move as PSG Departure Finalized

With his contract expired as of July 1st, 2024, 17-year-old Ethan Mbappé is on the brink of a fresh challenge in Ligue 1, having recently announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ethan Mbappé joined the Paris Saint-Germain youth academy from AS Bondy in 2017. Following in the footsteps of his famous older brother, Kylian Mbappé, Ethan has emerged as a standout talent among a new, highly skilled wave of PSG academy players.

He made his UEFA Youth League debut on September 6, 2022, against Juventus at just 15 years, 8 months, and 8 days old, becoming PSG’s third youngest player to feature in the competition, behind Abdoulaye Kamara and Warren Zaire-Emery.

In June 2021, he signed a new contract with PSG, tying him to the club until 2024. He made his debut with the senior team on December 16, 2022, in a 2-1 friendly win over Paris FC.

Ethan’s journey began at AS Bondy in 2015, and after two years, he joined PSG in the same window that brought Kylian to the club.

He scored on his debut for the under-12 team and quickly progressed through the ranks, eventually being called up to the U19s last summer.

Last season, he played 26 matches for the PSG U-19 team, scoring three goals and providing two assists. In the UEFA Youth League, he made six appearances, contributing one assist.

Ethan is a technically gifted, left-footed midfielder, known for his exceptional ball control, 1v1 dribbling skills, and fast direction shifts in possession.

Unlike his brother Kylian, who is famed for his blistering pace, Ethan excels in close ball control and intelligent movement, making him a formidable orchestrator in midfield.

His defensive work rate, vision, passing range, and composure under pressure draw comparisons to former Italian international Thiago Motta and current star Marco Verratti.

Ethan is also praised for his tackling, ability to read the game, and consistent defensive contributions.

Lille has become a prime destination for PSG Academy graduates in recent years.

The club’s ambitious projects and state-of-the-art facilities have helped former Parisians like Mike Maignan, Jonathan Ikoné, Timothy Weah, and Boubakary Soumaré shine before moving on to bigger stages.

With Bruno Genésio recently appointed to succeed Paulo Fonseca, Lille is eyeing the younger Mbappé to bolster their midfield. It's a forward-thinking move for Olivier Létang’s squad, especially as Ethan will be available on a free transfer.

Ethan Mbappé is set to join Lille, with the deal to be completed once his medical has been finalized.

This potential transfer could see the young talent taking a significant step in his burgeoning career, away from the shadow of his illustrious brother and into the spotlight in his own right.
