European Giants Set To Battle For ‘Wonderkid’ Desire Doue

With an abundance of talent being produced in France, it comes as no surprise that clubs have made the nation a priority when it comes to scouting.

Saliba, Camavinga, Tchouaméni, Zaïre-Emery and Barcola are just a few of France's new generation of stars making a name for themselves on the biggest stage.

19 year-old Désiré Doué will be looking to add his name to the list following two impressive campaigns to start his career.

The Rennes winger is attracting interest from the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.

Having spent his entire career at Rennes, signing at the age of five year-old, Doué’s progress to the first-team has been nothing short of remarkable.

At 16 years-old Doué had already begun his senior career, playing for the reserve team and training with the first-team simultaneously before signing a professional contract with the club in April 2022.

A first-team debut was soon to follow as just four months after signing a professional contract, Doué was used as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Lorient in Ligue 1 at the age of 17.

The 2005 born talent would make history that same month, scoring his first professional goal in a 3-1 win against Brest - becoming the first player born in 2005 to score in any of Europe’s top five major leagues.

He would also become the youngest ever French goalscorer in a European club competition at 17 years old, four months and four days - following an 89th minute winner in the Europa League against Dynamo Kyiv.

Doué would end the 2022/23 season with four goals and one assist in 34 appearances.

The following campaign would be more of the same for the Frenchman scoring four goals and providing four assists for a Stade Rennais side which finished 10th in Ligue 1.

Considered one of the most talented prospects in Europe.

Known for his dribbling ability, pace and range of passing, Doué can play in a number of positions including attacking midfield, central midfield or either wing.

Doué ranked inside the top two percent of central midfielders in the top five European leagues over the 2022–2023 season for progressive carries (3.4 per 90), and the top one percent for successful dribbles (3.9).

Although primarily viewed as an attacking player, Doué has received praise for his defensive work, registering 1.1 tackles per game.

"In my entire career, I've never played in such a young team, with players at 19 or 20 years old.”

"But it's always interesting to see how they progress. Desire has great potential. There are a few others but I don't want to say their names because I don't think it's good for them,” said former Manchester United, Chelsea and Rennes midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Then-manager Bruno Génésio had been full of praise for the France youth international, stating;

"He reads the game very well. Technically, right foot and even left foot, he's complete, with good control on both. Away from the pitch he's a dream. Easy, calm, with a streak of leadership whilst still asking for advice. He's both care-free and conscientious in his work. He's already a pro in his head".

Having been named in Thierry Henry‘s France squad for the Olympics, Doué will be looking to make a positive impression towards his suitors with Europe’s elite circling.
