EXCLUSIVE: Quenda to Stay At Chelsea As Alonso Era Begins

Football Park understands that Geovany Quenda is set to stay at Chelsea and be fully integrated into Xabi Alonso’s squad next season, with a loan move away from the club not an option.

The 19-year-old Portuguese national, who joined Chelsea over Manchester United and a reunion with former Sporting Lisbon mentor Ruben Amorim, signed on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge after being impressed with the club's vision for him and plans for the future, with his role in the side reported to be particularly important in closing the deal.

Though it remains to be seen which role Alonso believes he has potential to thrive in, a flurry of rumoured outgoings in West London suggests that the teenager has a significant part to play in Alonso’s new-look side, with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho all being linked with summer moves away.

Capable of playing on both the left and right wings, Quenda is also an accomplished wingback on both sides, which, with Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto being touted with a move to Manchester City and left-back Marc Cucurella's recent move to Real Madrid, could see the youngster come in as a like-for-like swap, slotting seamlessly into Xabi Alonso’s favoured five-at-the-back system.

However, the Blues' recent signing of Atalanta right wing-back Marco Palestra means that we will likely see Quenda deployed either on the left, or in a more attacking role, his preferred position; there is speculation that he could play backup to fellow Chelsea wonderkid and right-winger Estevao Willian, while ousting one of the other wantaway wingers from a starting spot isn’t out of the question either.

The Blues officially confirmed the £40 million deal for Quenda in March of last year, when the winger was just 17, but the Sporting talent opted to join the two-time Champions League winners in the summer of 2026 in order to gain an extra season of experience and regular minutes for his parent club.

Recent reports state that the teenager has agreed to cut his off-season short and travel to London on Saturday in a bid to hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge, as Alonso prepares to cast his eye over the talents that were not called up for the World Cup.

Since the Blue Co. takeover in 2022, Chelsea have evolved an unflattering reputation for shipping young players off on loan in a bid to accelerate their development, either to sister club RC Strasbourg or elsewhere in Europe.

Quenda is a talent deserving of more. Few 19-year-olds arrive at a club with as much first-team experience as him, and with two Liga Portugal trophies, as well as a Portuguese Cup under his belt already, he also brings a winning mindset, something that Chelsea have been in desperate need of in recent times.

The Portuguese starlet has long been touted as one of the most promising young attacking talents in Europe, amassing 86 games, nine goals and 13 assists for Sporting Lisbon since making his debut in the 2024/25 season.

Having waited over a year to see him in action at Stamford Bridge, it seems as if the Blues faithful have little time left to wait – if Alonso believes that Quenda is really as good as his numbers in Portugal say, they will be seeing him in the flesh as soon as Chelsea’s pre-season friendly with Australian outfit Western Sydney Wanderers at the end of July.
