Five Things We Learned From Canada 6-0 Qatar
Five Things We Learned From Canada 6-0 Qatar
Canada thrashed Qatar 6-0 at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
Qatar were handed two red cards in the game, and Lopetegui's men are now staring down a barrel. On the other hand, Canada are now poised to qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation's history.
Here are five things we learned from the game.
1. No Davies, No Problem
Alphonso Davies did not start the game again today as the player is still shaking off an injury he picked up with Bayern Munich.
Despite this, Canada showed they were not a one-man side today.
Make no mistake, the addition of Davies could make Canada a scary prospect for any national side, but Canada get on just fine without him.
2. David Stepped Up
After a poor first game against Bosnia-Herzegovina which saw him substituted at the hour mark, Jonathan David more than rectified this today.
The Juventus striker scored a hat-trick against Qatar which took his tally to 42 goals for his nation, the highest of all time.
David is crucial for Canada, and when he's not firing the team simply isn't the same. His performance today may just have helped Canada secure their place in the World Cup knockouts for the first time ever.
3. Harsh Refereeing?
Qatar were handed two red cards today, and while the first one was clear cut, the second was debatable.
This is the second World Cup game where a side has seen red twice. In the opener, South Africa received two red cards against Mexico, with one of them coming from a very questionable decision.
The World Cup always brings new phenomenon in terms of officiating, but this time it may be killing the game.
4. Mr Brightside
Without fail at every single World Cup game, Mr Brightside has played during the final heartbreak.
Undeniably a classic for sure, but everything has its point where it's a tad overplayed.
Perhaps it's playing to compensate for the dyer FIFA World Cup 2026 Offical Soundtrack...
Who knows.
5. Julen Lopetegui, What Happened?
Not long ago, Julen Lopetegui was the head coach of Real Madrid.
A few more spells in La Liga folllowed, and after that some time in the Premier League with Wolves and West Ham. Now, Lopetegui is the head coach of this calamitous Qatar side.
Once regarded as one of the best managers in the world, Lopetegui appears to be opting for the easy way out.
It's always a shame to see a good footballing brain go to waste.
