The Principality Stadium in Cardiff turned red and white in the 2026 Community Shield as Arsenal dispatched Manchester 3-0 in the Welsh Capital.

Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring in 30 seconds for the Gunners, before Kai Havertz headed home midway through the half from close range to double the lead for Mikel Arteta’s side despite the best efforts of City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. And the opening minutes of the second half saw Arsenal make it three, captain Martin Odegaard sat the Italian stopper down and calmly slotted home to confirm an 18th Community Shield title for the North Londoners.
But wirh the traditional English football curtain raiser going Arsenal’s way, what were five things we learned from the match in Cardiff
Arsenal Are A Problem (But Not For Them)
The quality of the Premier League champions was on full display for the world to see on Sunday afternoon, as they beat Manchester City in comfortable fashion.
The extent of Arsenal’s victory in the Community Shield however, is perhaps heightens by the fact that by the time the Gunners scored their third goal, William Saliba, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were no where to be seen on the pitch
The confidence and composure of Arsenal’s play on the ball, resilience off it, and the clinical finishing in attack despite the absence of three of the main stars will excite Gunners fans and send alarm bells ringing across rival sides in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta’s side are favourites for the 26/27 Premier League title, as the Spanish coach looks to achieve a feat the Gunners have never achieved in the Premier League era and win back-to-back titles.
And whilst Arsenal under Mikel Arteta are stable, teams all around them are entering a phase of transition, with Manchester City, Liveroool and Chelsea all starting the new campaign with new managers.
If their key stars stay fit, Arsenal could have yet another memorable season.
Lewis-Skelly MUST Stay in North London
Rumours in recent days have surrounded Myles Lewis-Skelly and a potential move away from Emirates Stadium, wirh reports suggesting the teenager had been offered to Chelsea and Manchester United.
However, the young midfielder started at the Principality alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Odegaard in the Gunners midfield and was excellent, especially for the opening goal where a pinpoint through-ball saw Calafiori through on goal and finish cooly past Donnarumma.

In the 75 minutes of action Lewis-Skelly played in Arsenal’s victory, the 19-year-old competed all but two of his passes, created one big chance in which he claimed an assist, and had 40 touches in what was a superb midfield performance.
Lewis-Skelly has everything to be the future of Arsenal’s midfield, and the club must not sell him at any cost this summer.
Is Martin Odegaard set for a renaissance?
It’s fair to say that on an individual basis, the last two seasons have been tough for Martin Odegaard.
After starring as one of the Premier Lwagye’s most impressive players in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, claiming Arsenal’s Player of the Season award in both, the Gunners captain has struggled for both consistent form and fitness since the beginning do the 24/25 season.
Multiple injures, particular in the shoulder area towards in the opening weeks of the season, saw the Arsenal captain start just 16 of the 38 matches in the Premier League as the Gunners ended their 22-year trophy drought, which followed a 24/25 season which saw similar circumstances for the Norwegian.

However, after a strong Woeld Cup as he captained Norway to the Quarter-finals, the midfielder looked sharp in brief pre-season cameos for Arsenal, and continued that in Cardiff as Odegaard ran the show, creating more chances than anyone else on the pitch and finishing for Arsenal’s third goal of the afternoon.
Despite his struggles, Odegaard is still very much the heartbeat of the Arsenal side, and if he finds his old self once more success willl come to Emirates Stadium.
Man City Need A Midfield Refresh
It’s been a summer of change and transition at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola is gone after a decade at the club, as is Bernardo Silva andJohn Stones, with Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri set to follow.
And it was clear in Cardiff that Manchester City are very much in need of more refreshments in the form of new signings, particularly in midfield areas with the departures of Reijnders and Rodri expected soon, incomings are no doubt needed if Maresca is to reallt challenge for thr Premier Leagye title in his first season in Manchester.

The record arrival of Elliot Anderson of course helps strengthen City’s midfield ranks, and Moroccan wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi is reportedly close to sealing a move to the Etihad from LOSC Lille. However, that alone may not be enough.
Enzo Fernandez is a player who City have seemingly been keen on, wirh Maresca wanting to link up once more with the Argentinian after working with him at Chelsea.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Citizens are ready to pay the £120 million asking price the Blues have placed on Fernandez.
With just weeks left of the window, City are no doubt in need of more numbers to build up their misfiled options ahead of the new campaign.
The Passing Of The Dynasty Torch?
Manchester City have held English football at a chokehold over the last decade since the arrival of Guardiola in 2016, winning six Premier League titles alongside multiple domestic cups and a UEFA Champions League during the decade long spell of the Catalan coach.
However, with Guardiola gone, was the match in Cardiff the first indication of the torch being handed over to Arsenal and Mikel Arteta?
Rarely since Guardiola stepped foot in English football has Arsenal played in a way against City as they displayed at the Principality. Not just winning the match, but winning in a way that showed they now believe they have leapfrogged the Manchester club as the top dogs in the Premier League. Keeping the ball in a composed manner and happy to play through the City side with calm, progressive passes from back to front to compleltyl control the action in Cardiff.
