Football Park’s EFL League Two Team of the Week - Matchday 3

27/08/24 18:55

We are another game week down in the EFL League Two season and this past weekend was filled with a lot of fantastic games.

But who were the standout players this week?

Let’s take a look at who makes Football Park’s EFL League Two Team of the Week.

GK - James Belshaw - Harrogate Town

Harrogate Town finally picked up their first win of the season this weekend against Colchester United and one of the biggest reasons for that was the performance of James Belshaw.

Belshaw kept a clean sheet in the game and made multiple outrageous stops to prevent Colchester. 6 critical saves in the game earning him a place in our team of the week.

LB - Brandon Fleming - Doncaster Rovers

Another player that came away with a clean sheet this weekend was Doncaster’s Brandon Fleming who played a key role in their 1-0 win over Morecambe.

Fleming defended well but also made an impact with attacking play - especially his overlapping runs in the game.

CB - Mickey Demetriou - Crewe Alexandra

Crewe picked up their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw against Swindon and Mickey Demetriou is one of the main reasons for that.

Swindon attacked well in this game and kept the pressure on the Crewe backline but it was Demetriou that was most composed, often getting the better of the players running at him. His solid defensive performance was key to Crewe keeping that clean sheet as well as picking up a point from the game.

CB - Tom Davies - Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere picked up an incredible win against Walsall despite being underdogs in the game and Tom Davies top performance helped lead them to a clean sheet.

Much like Demetriou, Davies remained most composed and looked the strongest defensively in this Tranmere side.

And against what is a strong Walsall side, especially going forward, to come away with a clean sheet was very impressive.

RB - Jamie Sterry - Doncaster Rovers

The second wing back from Doncaster in this team and with good reason.

Although Sterry’s game wasn’t his best - especially going forward - he look fantastic defensively and played a key role in keeping Morecambe out in the game. His energetic style of play was very effective.

If he can continue that and improve going forward we may see him more often in the team of the week going forward.

CM - Richard Smallwood - Bradford City

Bradford City came away with a terrific 3-1 win over Bromley this past weekend and it was Smallbone who impressed the most in their midfield.

Smallbone looked solid at all times during the game and even popped up with a goal. A terrific display.

CM - Dan Crowley - Notts County

Notts County smashed Grimsby 4-1 this weekend and once again it was Dan Crowley who was most key for the Magpies.

Quick, powerful and very creative Crowley proved a constant menace to Grimsby in this game. And that was even more proven by the fact that he was involved directly in 3 of the 4 goals Notts County scored in the game - scoring 2 and assisting 1.

CM - Elliott Newby - Barrow AFC

This pick may be a little bit cheeky especially as Newby played most of the game on the wing but we had to try and fit him in somewhere.

Newby came on in the 52nd minute of the match with the score 0-0. By the end of the game Newby picked up 3 assists and Barrow won the game 4-0. Talk about a super sub.

LW - Joe Tomlinson - MK Dons

Another team that picked up their first 3 points of the season this weekend was MK Dons and one of the men to thank for that has to be winger Joe Tomlinson.

He was a constant threat to Carlisle on the left hand side often making his way into the opposition box with ease. Not only this but he also managed to get his name on the scoresheet with a very well taken goal.

ST - Alassana Jatta - Notts County

The second Notts County player to make this team is Alassana Jatta.

Similarly to his teammate Crowley, Jatta was one of the biggest threats to Grimsby’s goal. And he was way too much for them to handle as Jatta got himself a goal and an assist in what was a fantastic performance.

The goal put him joint second in the League Two scoring charts. Could he come away with the golden boot at the end of the year?

RW - Aaron Nemane - MK Dons

And the final player in our team is another MK Dons winger. This time Aaron Nemane.

The former Manchester CIty man, much like Tomlinson, proved a threat at all times during MK Dons’ 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

Nemane came away with 2 assists in the game playing provider for his team in an incredible way. A top performance from the French winger.
