Sheffield United are set to secure the services of Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell. According to Danny Hall, the 31-year-old is set to make an EFL return, with the medical process set to be underway. The deal is said to be a permanent move, and Rothwell will likely join Kalvin Phillips as new midfield additions for The Blades on deadline day.
Rothwell spent the 2024/2025 season in the Championship with Leeds United before joining the Scottish side in the summer but has failed to make a start since October. The deal is said to be 'rapidly advancing' as Rothwell is set to be The Blades 'second January addition.
Rothwell knows his way around the Championship, having spent four seasons in the division with Blackburn before returning with Leeds last year. He made 36 appearances for Leeds in their promotion season, ranking amongst the highest for chances created (67) and pass accuracy (91%) in the division. A silky midfielder who will provide strong competition in the Sheffield United midfield ranks, while Gustavo Hamer has been strongly linked with a move away from the club.
The Blades currently sit 17th in the Championship, just seven points adrift of the relegation places. It was clear that strong investment was needed in the January window, and Rothwell is likely to be one of many incomings at the club ahead of the deadline. Rothwell spent consecutive seasons in the Premier League with Bournemouth before spending loan spells at Southampton and Leeds.
The 31-year-old has a Championship title to his name with the Yorkshire club, and Sheffield United fans will be hoping that a return to English football will get the best out of him. As report have suggsted, we can expect this deal to be completed in the coming hours.
