France 3-1 Senegal - 2026 World Cup Match Report and Player Ratings

Heavyweights collided in New York as two-time world champions and reigning finalists France opened their Group I campaign against African champions Senegal at New Jersey Stadium. This was the first time the sides faced each other in the World Cup since 2002, in which a goal from Papa Bouba Diop secured a victory for ther Lions of Teranga in Group A.

With silverware, pride and early momentum on the line, the stage was set for a blockbuster encounter. France were eventually victorious, recording a 3-1 win in their opening game.

Senegal ran the game in the first 20 minutes, with Kylian Mbappé squandering a pass after an audacious attempt at an overhead flick. The French defence was tested by Senegal, as they intelligently timed their attacks to beat the highline. Early on, Crystal Palace winger Ismaïla Sarr had a fantastic opportunity to put the Lions of Teranga ahead early on, but a brilliant recovery from Dayot Upamecano kept the score level.

Senegal appeared to have done their homework impeccably on the French side, with every pass weighted to perfection, and each press perfectly timed.

France began to gain momentum after 20 minutes, but nothing really stuck for them. Kylian Mbappé was dispossessed just outside the box, with Senegal pouncing on this lapse of concentration immediately.

The ball was played through to Nicolas Jackson who did fantastically well to move past three French defenders. Jackson entered the box and unleashed some trickery before striking the ball towards goal. Mike Maignan parried the ball against the post before the first hydration break of the game.

As has been the case with many hydration breaks so far in this World Cup, the momentum of the game slowed once the player re-entered the field of play. Nonetheless, France held possession, but Senegal worked unbelievably hard to rack them, dispossessing the side on multiple occasions. Despite winning the ball, Senegal were unable to mount a serious counter-attack.

Right at the death of the first half, Senegal had the chance of the game. Reaching the by-line of the box, Sadio Mané found Ismaïla Sarr on the penalty spot who blazed his shot over the bar.

Halftime Score: France 0-0 Senegal

The second half began and France looked instantly more alive. Senegal did not touch the ball for the first 5 minutes of the game, until a free fick was awared for an offside. As Senegal regained possession, France looked a lot more urgent.

Suddenly, Michael Olise came out of nowhere down the middle. Olise went all the way to the box and was one-on-one with Édouard Mendy who rushed off his line to make a fantastic save. Minutes later, Mendy did it again, this time denying Mbappé after Lamine Camara gave away possession with a sloppy pass.

France had another chance minutes later as Mbappé began to grow into the game. Bursting down the right flank, Mbappé was brought down in the box by Sadio Mané, this warranted a VAR check for a penalty. After a prolonged check, the penalty was not awarded as the referee determined that Mbappé initiated the contact.

After the controversial call, France picked themselves back up. Michael Olise threaded a beautiful through ball to Mbappé who broke through, only for the ball to be swept away by Mendy.

Michael Olise continued to terrify the Lions of Teranga, and finally on the 66th minute, he initiated the killer pass to Mbappé who slotted it home from close range.

Right after the French goal, Krepin Diatta found Nicolas Jackson with a lobbed pass, which the Chelsea striker smashed into the back of the net, only to be ruled out for offside.

As the players returned to the field after the second hydration break, the game entered the final quarter, and France now looked firmly in control.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Nicolas Jackson got on the end of a cross from Malick Diouf, but as he blazed it over the ball the play was ruled offside.

Senegal looked depleted, and subsitute Bradley Barcola pounced on this. Leaping on the end of a long ball, Barcola darted into the box to lift it over Mendy and give France their second.

With 8 minutes left to go of stoppage time, Senegal were pushing for one last chance. Everton star Iliman Ndiaye entered the field and looked dangerous, but the French defence held firm. However, a misplaced pass from France gave the ball to Ibrahim Mbaye, who waltzed through the defence to score a beautiful solo goal.

Only one goal in it with 3 minutes to go? Any chance of an equaliser? No.

Just after the restart, Mbappé picked up the ball and unleashed a curling strike from 35 yards. Catching Mendy off guard, the ball flew into the top corner, and that goal meant Kylian Mbappé became France's highest goalscorer of all time.

In the end, the depth of the French squad was just too much for Senegal to handle, and this meant that Les Bleus started their World Cup campaign on a high.

Despite a slow start in the first half, his continued relentlessness was on show, and he proved just why France are still the favourites.

Bad Day In The Office - Lamine Camara

The 22-year old Monaco midfielder had a poor game today. Throughout, misplaced passes from him were killing the momentum for Senegal.

Camara is young, and he has already achieved great things with the Lions of Teranga, and while today wasn't his best showing, he will be sure to make a comeback.
