Ghana 1-0 Panama - 2026 World Cup Match Report and Player Ratings

Ghana and Panama met at Toronto Stadium to round off the opening fixtures in Group L, with both sides eager to make an early statement on the world stage.

It has been a turbulent year for Ghana, who reached the World Cup but suffered the disappointment of missing out on AFCON qualification, prompting the appointment of veteran coach Carlos Queiroz after a string of poor friendly results.

Meanwhile, Panama arrived full of confidence after an impressive run of performances in the build-up to the tournament and looked determined to carry that momentum onto football's biggest stage.

Panama opened the game brightly, catching Ghana out early. Bursting through the centre of the pitch, Cecilio Waterman unleashed a shot from outside the box which forced a save early on from Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Ghana are without a win in 8 months, and that lack of confidence was showing in the opening minutes of the game. The Black Stars continued to be stretched by Panama who were growing from strength to strength as the game went on.

Ghana had flashes of intent, with Antoine Semenyo attempting to stamp his mark on proceedings, yet they were unable to break the Panama backline.

As the players rejoined the pitch after the first hydration break, Panama continued to dominate the ball, but they just lacked the final moment of decisiveness.

In the first 30 minutes of the game, one could count more famous people in the crowd than they could Ghana chances, with Queiroz's side struggling to make their mark.

Panama had their best chance of the half thus far when winger Cristian Martinez burst through the Ghanaian defence at speed. Jerome Opoku tracked the player, and after a nudge, Martinez went down in the box. The referee ruled play to go on, which riled Panama into gear.

Now beginning to be more direct with 10 minutes left in the half, Panama began to look dangerous. A cross from Martinez moments after being denied a penalty was punched away by Ati-Zigi, who went down for the second time in the game moments later.

With a wounded goalkeeper between the sticks, and a relentless Panama in front of them, Ghana held on for dear life until the half-time whistle.

After going down multiple times in the first half, Ghanaian keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was substituted at the break for Benjamin Asare.

Queiroz must have given an aggressive team talk at the break, because Ghana came out in the second half a lot more positve. Within the first 5 minutes, the side created a host of chances, more than they did in the entirety of the first 45.

While Ghana continued to add pressure, Panama resisted and responded with togetherness. On the hour mark, Cristian Martinez had another golden opportunity to break the deadlock for Panama, only for his shot to find the side netting.

Ghana began to ramp up the pressure before the final hydration break, but they still couldn't find the decisive moment. Suddenly, in a moment completely against the run of play, Antoine Semenyo found Jordan Ayew in the box. Poised to score, Ayew was intercepted at the last second by Jiovany Ramos.

Undeterred, Ghana kept pushing. New attacking substitutions allowed them to play a 4-2-4 in attack, and this opened up the entire game. Semenyo woke up, and Queiroz's subsitutions made an immediate impact.

After the hydration break, Semenyo struck again for Ghana, misplacing his shot into the hands of Orlando Mosquera. Ghana continued to push, yet nothing stuck.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, both sides were going for it. The intensity rose once more, and as the teams neared stoppage time it was all still up for grabs. Ghana had their chance of the game as Antoine Semenyo played the ball through to Brandon Thomas-Asante. The Coventry forward forced a fantastic save from Mosquera, afterwards, the move was ruled offsides.

In the dying embers of the game, with seconds to go on the clock, Thomas-Asante found space on the left again. The winger shrugged off a tackle and burst through before executing a driven shot towards goal. With the shot drifting wide, 20-year old starlet Caleb Yirenkyi tapped it in to give the Black Stars the lead just before the final whistle.

Panama had one last attempt at goal, with Mosquera coming up to win a header for the side, however the side failed to equalise in the clsoing moments.

Man Of The Match - Caleb Yirenkyi

The 20-year old Nordsjælland midfielder was inspired in Toronto tonight.

His goal sealed the winner, but his overall play was brilliant. In a Ghana side that looked deflated, Yirenkyi ran the midfield by orchestrating attacks from deep and providing an effective shield to the backline.

We love to see young players doing well in the World Cup, and we've seen it time and time again. Caleb Yirenkyi is the next big name on Ghana's conveyor belt of talent in Europe, and the sky is the limit.

Bad Day In The Office - Cecilio Waterman

The 35-year old striker was wasteful in front of goal this evening. Early on in the game, he missed a great chance to put Panama ahead. Time and again in this World Cup, we have seen what happens when you don't take your chances.

The 35-year old was substituted in the second half, and we hope he went to go and look in the mirror.
