Kane Misses Gunman Accolade

Harry Kane's chance to top the Champions League goalscoring charts for the second time went begging against PSG, as his late effort was neither enough to send Bayern Munich to the final nor to usurp Kylian Mbappe from the top spot.

The Bavarian heavyweights drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain at the Allianz Arena in the second leg of what had been a sensational semi-final tie. PSG, the defending Champions League winners, won 6-5 on aggregate to set up a final with Arsenal in Budapest.

Kane found a late equaliser on the night in stoppage time with Bayern looking for one more late finish to send the game to extra-time, but PSG held firm to knock the German giants out.

It was his 14th goal in the competition so far, bringing him one shy of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe. But, with Bayern's tournament now over, he won't get the chance to catch the Frenchman. The only player in the top five of the golden boot rankings still active in the Champions League this season is PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who sits in fourth place level with Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon with 10 goals. Unless the Georgian nets six goals in the final, Mbappe will take the Golden Boot.

Kane Inches Away From Catching Kylian

This isn't the first time that Kane and Mbappe have battled for room in the Champions League goalscoring charts - the duo were level with each other in the 23/24 season, when the latter was still with PSG, when they scored eight apiece. However, the Englishman joined a very prestigious club with his goal on Wednesday night - he had scored in his sixth consecutive Champions League knockout stage appearances.

He had scored Bayern's first goal in the first leg from a spot-kick at the Parc des Princes last week, which followed in after goals in both legs of the Bavarian side's quarterfinal success over Real Madrid (and Mbappe), the second leg of their last-16 tie vs. Atalanta (having not come off the bench in the first leg), and the second leg of their aggregate quarterfinal loss to Inter Milan in April 2025.

Only one Cristiano Ronaldo has accomplished such a feat of scoring in the Champions League before, managing it between the April's of 2012 and 2013.

Regardless of the European exit, it has still been an outstanding season for Kane with a World Cup looming. He scored his 55th goal of the season in all competitions on Wednesday, which equals a record set by club legend and Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski from the 2019/20 season.

On top of that, his 33 Bundesliga goals this season has him a whopping 15 clear of second-placed Deniz Undav with just two matchdays remaining in Germany's top flight.

PSG Topple Bayern to Set Up Final with Arsenal

Arsenal's first Champions League final opponents in 20 years were decided last night, with PSG following in on their stunning 5-4 win over Bayern in the first leg to reach the final in Budapest.

In doing so, the Parisian side will have the chance to join the likes of Real Madrid, Milan and Nottingham Forest in retaining their Champions League (or European Cup) crown, having toppled Inter 5-0 in last season's final to win the accolade for the first time in their history.

With the game hanging in the balance following a Champions League all-timer in Paris last week, PSG's backline - which was hit four times in Paris last week - kept Bayern's imperious attack of Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Michael Olise largely in check.

Balon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele hit home a fantastic first-time finish to open the scoring in a deadlocked game after a blistering assist from Kvaratskhelia, who came down the left side and pulled a great pass back to the Frenchman.

Controversy would soon come, with Bayern beside themselves after the half-hour mark when the referee decided against calling a handball against already-booked Nuno Mendes, and then did so again for another handball infraction from Joao Neves - this one coming in PSG's area, with the Bavarians being denied a penalty.

It appeared as if VAR was not consulted for either decision, and replays showed that the referee had already blown for a stoppage after a handball by Konrad Laimer before the alleged incident from Mendes.

Bayern knocked on the door all game, but could not find a way past a steadfast PSG defence until Kane's late goal that handed Bayern some fluttering late hope. The couldn't get a desperate equaliser for the tie, though, sending PSG to the Champions League final for consecutive seasons where they will face off with Arsenal, who defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 over two legs to reach their first showcase match in two decades.
