How Calafiori Fits into Arteta's Arsenal

According to solid reports, Mikel Arteta has long eyed Riccardo Calafiori for Arsenal, an interest predating his breakout performance at the European Championships. Despite the attention garnered at the Euros, Calafiori’s potential role at Arsenal aligns with a tactical vision Arteta has nurtured for two years.

Two years ago, Arsenal signed Oleksandr Zinchenko, a move that required adjustments. While Zinchenko contributed to ball progression, his converted midfielder role disrupted defensive structure. This became evident as Arsenal’s defense faltered towards the end of the 22-23 season.

Arteta's pursuit of defensive stability led to changes in attacking tempo and the acquisition of Declan Rice. Additionally, the use of Zinchenko evolved, with players like Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu taking precedence. This highlighted Arteta's desire for a different left-back profile.

Calafiori offers defensive solidity and versatility, capable of playing both as a quasi left-center back and an orthodox left-back. His ability to carry the ball from the back adds another dimension to Arsenal’s progression from defense to attack.

In possession, Calafiori can invert, creating a box shape with Rice and Ødegaard, allowing a more fixed role for the number 9. This structure supports a traditional center-forward, enhancing Arsenal’s attacking options.

Arteta values Calafiori’s defensive discipline, a trait that ensures adherence to tactical structure. With Granit Xhaka’s departure and Zinchenko's roaming tendencies, Calafiori’s arrival fills a crucial defensive gap, providing the left-side stability Arteta has sought since summer 2022.
