How much will Kante cost West Ham?

West Ham have made a formal approach to Al Ittihad regarding the availability of midfield dynamo N'Golo Kanté, Sky Sports understands. Will Unwin initially broke the story, and it’s confirmed that direct discussions have taken place between the clubs and Kanté's representatives.

Al Ittihad have made their position clear: they have no intention of letting Kanté go. The Frenchman, who moved to Saudi Arabia in 2023 after a glittering seven-year spell with Chelsea, is considered an indispensable asset and a consummate professional. Despite this, sources suggest Kanté is open to a London return, although he is content with his current situation.

How much will Kante cost West Ham?

West Ham are prepared to shell out around £20 million for the 33-year-old, who showcased his enduring class at Euro 2024. The Hammers are on the hunt for a new defensive midfielder after Kalvin Phillips failed to impress during his loan from Manchester City last season, leading to the club's decision not to pursue a permanent deal.

How could Kante fit in at West Ham?

New West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui is a long-time admirer of Kanté. The Spanish coach has been keen on securing the midfielder’s services since his short stint at Real Madrid. Lopetegui’s tactical acumen and Kanté’s relentless work rate could forge a formidable partnership, reminiscent of Lopetegui's successful collaborations with players like Casemiro at Real Madrid and Ever Banega at Sevilla.

Kanté's Premier League journey began in 2015 when he joined Leicester City from Caen. He quickly became a key figure in the Foxes' miraculous 2016 title win. A £32 million move to Chelsea followed, where Kanté continued to shine, winning another Premier League title, the Champions League, FA Cup, and Europa League. His stellar performances earned him the Premier League and PFA Player of the Year accolades in the 2016-17 season.

Lopetegui’s systems typically emphasize high-energy pressing and solid defensive structures, areas where Kanté excels. The midfielder’s ability to cover ground, intercept passes, and break up play fits seamlessly into Lopetegui’s tactical blueprint. Former players under Lopetegui, such as Casemiro and Banega, thrived due to their tactical discipline and work rate, qualities that are synonymous with Kanté's game.

While Al Ittihad remain firm on their stance, West Ham's pursuit of Kanté is far from over. The Hammers are determined to bolster their midfield and see Kanté as the ideal candidate to anchor their new-look side under Lopetegui. As the transfer window heats up, this could be one of the most intriguing sagas to watch.
