Ipswich Aim to Snatch Welsh Wonderkid from Fellow Championship Team

Ipswich Town are looking to hijack Wrexham’s move for Rennes midfielder Jordan James, according to Alan Nixon.

The Welsh international, who only left Birmingham City for Ligue 1 last summer, is now attracting serious interest back in England as both Championship sides prepare to scrap for his signature.

Tractor Boys and Red Dragons in Transfer Tug of War

James, 21, has already built a strong reputation despite his young age, making more than 100 senior appearances for Birmingham before his £4m switch to France in 2024. Now a regular for Wales, he has collected 20 caps since his debut in 2023 and was described by one Birmingham coach as 'technically very good and versatile' during his academy years.

Wrexham had been leading the chase, tabling a larger offer than Ipswich and reportedly swaying James with their 'story' and growing project under Hollywood ownership. But Nixon reports that Kieran McKenna’s side are determined to convince the midfielder to join them at Portman Road instead, with talks expected to take place this weekend.

Why Ipswich Could Hold the Advantage

Although Wrexham can boast financial power and a growing reputation as Wales' team, Ipswich may have the stronger pitch when it comes to career progression.

The Tractor Boys have just come down from the Premier League and see James as an ideal partner for new recruit Jens Cajuste in the middle of the park. His versatility and Championship experience make him a natural fit for McKenna’s system.

Ipswich’s midfield has been heavily depleted this summer, with the likes of Omari Hutchinson, Massimo Luongo, and Sam Morsy all departing. That leaves a genuine opportunity for James to step in and play regular football, something that could appeal as he weighs up his next move.

A Big Decision Ahead

Serie A side Parma are also keen, though their loan-to-buy proposal is unlikely to match the straight cash offers from Ipswich and Wrexham. Rennes, meanwhile, are open to a sale having only used James sparingly since his arrival.

Ultimately, the choice may come down to whether James prioritises Wrexham’s high-profile rise or Ipswich’s promise of a quicker return to the Premier League. Either way, a decision is expected swiftly, with both clubs pushing to finalise talks before the transfer deadline.

I am an aspiring sports journalist looking to make a name for myself in the media industry while carrying out my studies at university. I am entering my final year at Durham University, where I study History and Spanish. This past year I did a year abroad in Spain, where I carried out an internship at the Olive Press - an expat newspaper - and this experience opened my eyes to the world of journalism. I wrote multiple articles a day for the newspaper's website, on a range of topics, while also carrying out interviews with locals for exclusive stories. As a result, my stories were a regular feature in the print editions, including on the front page.

Over the past few years, I have also written for the 'Sports' section of my university newspaper, Palatinate. I have covered a range of sports, from handball to tennis to football. Now, I am searching for further journalistic opportunities, with a specific focus on sport. Football Park has provided me with such a chance, and I hope to build an impressive portfolio with the company. If you want to contact me, email: [email protected]
