Ipswich Closing in on West Brom Right Back

Ipswich Town are edging closer to the signing of West Bromwich Albion right back Darnell Furlong, according to The Telegraph's John Percy.

The deal is said to be worth up to a total of £4 million pounds. £3.5 million is guaranteed and £500,000 is dependent on Ipswich's promotion back to the Premier League.

Furlong has been a mainstay in West Brom's defence ever since he joined from Queens Park Rangers in 2019. He should provide Ipswich with Championship experience as they look to go back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

What Does Furlong Add to the Ipswich Team?

At 29 years old, Furlong brings an element of stability and experience to the Ipswich backline. He has made over 200 Championship appearances for the Baggies across the past seven seasons.

Ipswich already have an established list of right backs at the club, with the likes of Ben Johnson and Ashley Young joining from Everton in the summer.

The addition of Furlong will add competition to the position, which is key in a promotion campaign. He also has the skill of being able to long-throw, which may be key in creating goals for The Tractor Boys.

Risky Move for The Baggies

With the loss of a guarantee starter for West Brom, you could argue that this is a risky move for the club.

Albion will be vying to get promoted this season, and the loss of Furlong to a Championship promotion rival could be concerning. They lack another natural right back, but new signing Krystian Bielik could provide cover whilst they look for another in the transfer market.

It would not be surprising to see if West Brom buy a right back before the transfer window slams shut on 1st September.
