Is this the tightest Championship season we have seen?

The race for Championship glory has delivered one of the most fiercely contested battles arguably in Championship history. Fans have been on the edge of their seats all the way and with only four games remaining, the title is looking like it will be going down to the last day for the first time since the 2012/2013 season.

Two teams are currently joint on points at the top of the Championship table as third place begins to lag behind.

With the title race going down from three to two, discover how close the latest instalment of the Championship has been throughout the entirety of the season and which teams are continuing to put themselves in the fight for top.

Sheffield United: Bottlejobs of the season

It was merely three games ago that Sheffield United defeated Coventry City and moved to the top of the Championship table.

Winning 62% of their matches this season, Sheffield United have fought at the top of the table throughout.

Only losing one of their first ten matches, Sheffield sat down in fourth place and after a further eight matches found themselves top of the table for the first time and have since been bouncing between first and third as the battle with Leeds and Burnley has continued to grow in passion as the season has progressed.

Collecting the most wins from the tournament, Chris Wilder’s side have been favourites to grab the number one spot.

However, disaster has soon struck, as Sheffield pick up three consecutive defeats in a row, with their most recent defeat at the hands of bottom of the table Plymouth Argyle.

Slipping down the table, Sheffield now sit in third position but have dropped five points behind Burnley and Leeds with only four games left to play with Burnley being one of those games.

Leeds United: The Prolific Peacocks

Also only collecting one loss from their first ten matches, Leeds United began their surge and have spent the most time at the top of the table of any team in the league this season.

Suffering huge heartbreak last season at Wembley Stadium, losing in the promotion play off final to Southampton, Daniel Farke did not want his side to leave it up to playoffs this time around.

Leeds would make a transfer at the beginning of the season that would change their attack into the most prolific attack in the league.

Acquiring Israli winger Manor Solomon on a season long loan from Tottenham Hotspur, he has managed 17 goal contributions so far in the league whilst his new partner occupying the other side of the pitch leads the league in goal contributions, as Dan James tallies 21 for the season.

Leeds United have since passed their goal tally at the end of last season with four games still left to play. The Whites have managed 82 goals so far in the league, with the next closet team being 13th place Norwich City on 63.

It has not been all that easy for Leeds, as they could have had the league firmly wrapped up if not for continuous mistakes from goalkeeper Illan Meslier, which has reportedly cost them ten points in the league this season. Backup Karl Darlow has since been brought in and has conceded two goals from three matches, keeping a clean sheet against the third highest scoring team in the league Middlesbrough.

Leading the league by a huge goal difference, Leeds have a rather straightforward run to the end with the likes of Oxford United, Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle left to play.

Burnley: Defence Wins You Championships

Regardless of winning the trophy, this Championship campaign will forever go down in Burnley history.

Collecting 28 clean sheets from 41 league appearances, James Trafford has arguably been the best goalkeeper across all of England this season. Burnley have currently conceded 13 goals from 42 matches, completely blowing out the current record for least goals conceded in the Championship which is held by Watford with 30 back in the 20/21 season.

Chelseas record breaking 04/05 team conceded 15 goals in a 38-game season. Can Burnley hold on in their last four matches and cement themselves as the best defence in a single season in the UK.

Boasting an incredible 0.31 goals conceded per match this season, 69% of their games have resulted in a clean sheet for the Clarets. Mourinho’s Chelsea team finished on approximately 0.39 goals conceded per game; Meaning Parkers side are right on track for the history book.

Currently boasting a tremendous 29 game unbeaten run in the league, Burnley took until April to jump to the top of the Championship table, having lurked in the shadows behind Leeds and Sheffield all season.

Managing a brilliant victory over Norwich city from their last game, Burnley sit tied on points at the top but with a nine-goal gap in goal difference behind Leeds, will Burnley be able prove Sir Alex Ferguson correct with defence winning you championships.

What Happens Next?

As it stands, Leeds and Burnley are automatically going to the Premier League although as we have seen from both Scott Parker and Daniel Farke, neither manager wants to take second place.

Farke’s Leeds will face off against a desperate Oxford United side looking to ensure safety from the relegation zone. Scott Parker makes the trip to 11th place Watford and Chris Wilder will host a 22nd place Cardiff City who are yearning to escape the relegation zone.

Will it be a historic third league title for Farke? Will Scott Parker grasp the glory with his first? Or is there yet to be another unpredictable twist in the fight for Championship supremacy.
