Alvaro Morata is a modern day enigma. Not only do his performances as a striker vary wildly week in and week out, but the 33-year-old Spaniard seems to be almost constantly to-ing and fro-ing across Europe.

If European football were to have a tongue-in-cheek face of money laundering, Morata’s only rival would be Romelu Lukaku - over the course of the last 12 years, Morata has moved nine times, with six of these shared between Real Madrid, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, with accumulative transfer fees adding up to around £150 million.

However, his tenth and most recent move promises to trump all of his previous transfers simply for the outlandish, completely unexpected destination, as the Spaniard is now due to leave high-flying Como for Spanish second division side Leganes on the fifth loan deal of his career.

Morata On The Move

In truth, Morata has been largely unjustly disliked for much of his career. It’s not a personality or ego thing - it is simply the fact that he has a tendency to miss glaring chances on a more frequent basis than some of his counterparts.

Despite the constant criticism of the Spaniards quality, Morata has been a consistent 15 to 20 goal per season striker for nigh on a decade, boasts 37 international goals in 87 caps for Spain, and has been consistently coveted by some of the best sides in the world.

His career, while blighted by derision and hatred from fans all over, has actually been a huge success, littered with accolades, including two Champions Leagues, a European Championship, a pair of Serie A and La Liga titles, and a Europa League.

However, no player is safe from father time, and he seems to have hit Morata particularly hard in recent years - the striker has only netted 14 goals in all competitions since July 2024 in a marked downward spike in his output, and a move to Como last summer all but announced that he was done actively competing at the highest level.

While he did play 30 times as Como shockingly qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history, he only scored once, underlining the fact that he could no longer lead the line at the top level.

Nevertheless, Morata’s depth of experience and trophy-winning nous will be given a heroes welcome in the city of Leganes, a side who over the last decade have played more seasons in the second tier than the top flight, and one that is in dire need of a killer instinct up top.

33 really isn’t that old in the football world anymore - the likes of Messi and Ronaldo have led us into a new age where players can still play a significant role in high-profile games, and though Morata is perhaps well past his prime, he can still offer so much to a second division team vying for promotion.
