Italian Football in the Gutter After Brand New Head Coach RESIGNS After Dodgy Affiliations
If you thought the state of the Italian national team was already bad, what with missing the last three World Cup tournaments in all, then the Andrea Pirlo saga has hit home just how much work the Italian FA have to do if they are to get the Azzurri even halfway back to the glory days of yesteryear.
First of all, agreeing to bring in Andrea Pirlo over Pep Guardiola was an… uneducated decision at best. Why pick a man with just five years' experience (and no international job on his CV) over a man who many consider to be the greatest of all time, jobless for the first time in 10 years?

Pirlo had agreed a contract and was expected to be announced on Tuesday, but his role as a global ambassador for a Russian betting website has caused backlash in Italy.

It’s an easy decision to criticise, and while we understand that any given FA has a bias towards domestic options rather than foreign applicants, the decision to pass on the Spaniard was a misstep.
However, it paled in comparison to what came next. Just two days after it became clear he was leading candidate for the job, Pirlo was withdrawn from contention for the role, all because of an affiliation with an unspectacular Russian betting brand, a move that has sparked furor across Italia.
Footballing Snowflakes
The Italians are some of football’s best pantomime villains – they'll take tough tackling on any given opponent to the extreme, all while going down at the slightest contact themselves. However, no one anticipated that their FA would be even bigger snowflakes than the team itself.
Pirlo is one of Italy's greatest ever players, a World Cup winner, and an up-and-coming name in the world of management. Though they were missing a trick by ignoring Guardiola, Pirlo was far from a bad appointment, and for a few hours, the deal looked almost certain to happen as Italy plotted a course back to the business end of major tournaments.
The Italian FA sought him out, asked him to consider the job, and entered into contract talks with him – it wasn’t as if the current Dubai United management came to them with something to hide, hoping to get the job anyway.

Instead, the Italian footballing federation simply failed to vet their prime candidate properly. Surely an affiliation with Fonbet, a Russian betting brand, would have been overwhelmingly clear beforehand, as no one was actively trying to hide it.
What is more, the nature of the relationship is, according to Pirlo, “exclusively of a commercial and sporting nature”, highlighting the fact that Pirlo is not engaging in any shadowy betting behaviour and is instead legitimately advertising a properly run gambling platform.
Had the nature of the relationship been different – Pirlo could have been using it for match-fixing or fraud reasons – then we would understand the decision to walk away from him as a candidate. However, simply being affiliated to the brand seems an insufficient reason to deprive one of Italy’s finest the chance of managing his country.
Italy Irate
The entire country of Italy is now in a state of protest, and it's not just the fans – few are more furious than Italian national team technical director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo, both of whom have threatened to resign in the wake of the Pirlo farce.
This comes just 16 days after Maldini took on the position – clearly, Pirlo was a candidate of his choosing and a candidate he was desperate to bring in, going by his inflammatory reaction.

Legally, the reasons why Pirlo cannot take the job are clear. Having a head coach affiliated to any Russian brand is viewed as politically sensitive thanks to the Russia/Ukraine conflict, while Italian betting restrictions are notoriously tight. With the role of Italian head coach considered a state-linked role, any affiliations to a foreign gambling body – especially a foreign one – would naturally be considered incompatible with the role.
There is common sense behind the decision, sure, but at what point do you draw the line? Pirlo maintained an entirely professional relationship with the betting brand but it was never anything more than that. We’ve seen football players appear in beer, underwear and unhealthy food adverts for years now, and yet they never receive any scrutiny; only the occasional laugh.
Pirlo himself was understandably fuming at the snub and took to social media to explain the situation and all of the ridiculous nuances surrounding it.

Out of respect for the institutions, the federation, and all the people involved, I have so far chosen to remain silent. However, I believe it is necessary to clarify a few points.”
“Throughout my career, first as a player and now as a coach, I have always carried out my work in full compliance with the laws of the countries in which I have worked and with the contracts I have signed.”
“The professional collaboration that has been the subject of the recent controversy arises within the context of my working experience in the United Arab Emirates and is exclusively commercial and sporting in nature.”

“Attributing a political meaning to that collaboration means attributing to me beliefs that I have never expressed and that do not belong to me. I wish to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the esteem and trust they have shown me. I know their competence, their seriousness, and the love they have always dedicated to Italian football.”
It is an unfortunately premature end to a chapter which likely would have seen an Italian resurgence ahead of the next World Cup – Pirlo is undoubtedly an Italian coach, and having experienced the pinnacle of international success when he was part of the squad, he would have been able to bring that intangible winning experience and warrior mentality back to a team long deprived of such traits.
However, thanks to the unpleasantly convoluted political standpoint on betting brands in Italy, Pirlo’s dreams have gone up in smoke, and Italy once again must begin a search for anyone willing to throw themselves into a seemingly cursed role.
Pep is still out there, but for some reason, we can’t see him signing on the dotted line…
