Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador - 2026 World Cup Match Report and Player Ratings

Following Germany's crushing victory over minnows Curacao, Group E's remaining nations locked horns in Philadelphia looking to follow suit and pick up three points of their own. With Germany seeming like a solid chance of topping the group after their performance, this clash could prove crucial in determining who gets second and who will have to hope to be one of the eight best third-placed finishers.

Due to the travel ban effectively enforced by the US and Donald Trump on fans from a handful of competing nations, including the Ivory Coast, it effectively would have felt like an away fixture in the near 70,000 seater capacity stadium which looked almost completely flooded with Ecuadorian support.

In a group consisting of Germany and Curacao, a draw would have been a result in which both team would be happy with, considering they are all but assumed to have beaten Curacao, meaning a spot in the knockouts should be secured for both nations, and that is exactly what happened, in this very exciting 0-0 draw.

Diallo Steals Three Points at the Death After Brilliant Singo Run

Despite being known for their incredible defensive structure, Ecuador's shape was challenged early on by Les Elephants, firstly by Yan Diomande who tried to thread a ball through to Elye Wahi before Willian Pacho put a stop to it. Just moments later, the African side attempted a long ball over the top, which was again met by an Ecuador player.

10 minutes on the clock, and it was Ecuador who had an incredible chance through Enner Valencia to take the lead following a good piece of work down the left from Pedro Vite, but unfortunately the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play prior to the cross to Valencia.

The chances didn't stop there either, as next up it was John Yeboah who fought well for the ball on the right side, before cutting inside and letting a strong left-footed strike go, sailing just over the bar - Ivory Coast certainly were made to think about their next move.

Eventually, Ivory Coast did get their chance and they came so close to taking the lead when Franck Kessie laid the ball off to Bazoumana Toure on the left of the box, before his careful effort almost crept into the far corner if not for a fingertips save from Hernan Galindez as the electric start to the game continued.

The hectic action continued on, and Emmanuel Agbadou received the ball from Galindez's long ball, but Yeboah caught him out in possession before unleashing a fierce strike which cannoned off the crossbar in the last of the action before the fans could breathe for a hydration break.

There may have been a short break, but the physical nature of the action remained, and soon Seko Fofana would receive the game's first yellow card for an awful lunge behind Caicedo.

Ecuador continued to have the better of Ivory Coast, and after playing the ball about very neatly on the edge of the box, a wonderfully-timed ball through to Alan Minda looked sure to find the back of the net, but the woodwork came to Les Elephants' aid once again.

With 10 minutes to go in the first period, it was Yan Diomande's chance to impress. A brilliant run down the right flank saw him get the better of Piero Hincapie before he squared the ball to Nicolas Pepe, with it surely destined for goal. Alan Franco, however, had other ideas, sliding in at the last moment to block Pepe's shot to keep the scores level.

The second half almost started ever so well for the South Americans, who linked up with a beautiful give-and-go between Gonzalo Plata and Valencia, ending in the latter striking into the near side netting following a great pass over the top of the defence by Plato.

Shortly after, Ivory Coast earned their best chance of the tie, when Diomande broke down the right side before delivering an excellent ball middle towards Elye Wahi, but his strike found the crossbar.

Diomande again impressed as he almost found himself on the scoresheet. Getting the ball on the left of the box, he dribbled his way through two Ecuador defenders scared to risk giving away a penalty, but he lacked the composure to keep his shot down.

Shortly after coming on the pitch, substitute Angelo Preciado worked really well down the right side, before playing the ball to Plata, whose thumping strike was hit straight at Fofana. However, this bit of play put the crowd back in fine voice once again.

With minutes to go Nilson Angulo earned a crucial free-kick quite far on the left flank, potentially creating another big chance for Ecuador. The ball from Caicedo was not bad and put into a good area, winning a corner.

Just moments later, after Odilon Kossounou was brought on, it forced Wilfried Singo to move to right-back, but what a move it was. The 25-year-old picked up the ball on the next attack and ran all the way down the right side before playing the ball inwards to Amad Diallo, who placed his shot perfectly into the bottom left corner in the 90th minute to all but secure their spot in the knockouts already.

Player of the Match - Wilfried Singo

The 25-year-old was up for the game from the very beginning. He played his heart out from the outset, screaming at every challenge he put in and every failed Ecuador attack.

Then in the dying moments of the regular 90, he takes the ball down the right flank, making up so much ground before laying the ball off to Diallo for the winner.

Bad Day at the Office - Seko Fofana

Although he may have recorded the most amount of shots throughout the fixture, there was much more hoped out of him than he gave today.

He was one the three rogue Ivorian players who received a booking in the first half for a poor challenge, and it was an awful tackle on Caicedo which earned him the card.
