Plymouth Argyle have reportedly agreed to a loan move for 29-year-old defender Wes Harding from Millwall. According to Pete O'Rourke, Plymouth has secured a deal for the rest of the season for the defender, who is out of contract in the summer. The Lions have strength in depth in the defensive department, and it seems in the best interest of both parties that the Jamaican international seeks regular minutes elsewhere.
The League One side has been on a resurgence under Tom Cleverley, though defeat to Stockport County showed defensive vulnerabilities in the side. Harding offers heaps of experience and has proven to be a versatile option in the backline, including stints at full-back, wing-back, and centre-back for Millwall.
Harding established himself as a fan favorite among the Millwall fans, credited for his reliability and leadership, both on and off the pitch. The defender brings heaps of experience with him, a standout performer for Rotherham United in their promotion season, and has made over 170 appearances in the second tier. Alongside the defensive side of things, Harding brings a notable attacking threat, scoring three goals in four Championship matches in the 2023/2024 campaign.
A regular starter for The Millers during his three seasons at the club, featuring in all 46 league matches in the 2020/2021 season. The Millwall backline has been credited for being one of the strongest in the Championship this season; hence, he has made just eight league appearances in this campaign. A proven defender in the division, Argyle will be adding invaluable experience and quality to their defensive ranks.

Harding will be after regular playing time, bringing strong competition to the likes of Joe Edwards in the Plymouth backline. Argyle currently sits 14th in the League One table and has an outside chance of claiming a play-off spot, having been heavily fancied to bounce back at the first time of asking. Smart signings like this will only bolster their chances of throwing their hat into the ring, and it will be interesting to see if they explore a permanent deal for the defender in the summer.
