The England international has endured a long and difficult recovery after the serious knee injury had ruled him out for months, but finally made his comeback appearance at a significant moment with Spurs firmly in the relegation battle. Maddison was introduced in the 80th minute to a warm reception and looked ready to impact the game with the scoreline 1-1.

One of the nicest moments you’ll see came before he had even entered the pitch. Leeds United boss Daniel Farke greeted Maddison with a handshake on the touchline as the midfielder prepared to come on, with the pair clearly sharing mutual respect after working with each other years ago. Then, after the final whistle, the two embraced warmly once again in an emotional moment that summed up the occasion.

Maddison himself appeared overwhelmed by the significance of the night. As he walked off the pitch at full-time, the 28-year-old seemed close to tears after finally completing another major step in his recovery journey.

What Maddison's Return Means for All Parties

For Tottenham, Maddison’s return is a timely one, not only for the remaining two games of the current Premier League campaign but also looking ahead into next season. When fit, he remains one of the club’s most creative and influential players, capable of changing games and having that individual quality that Spurs have badly missed during his absence.

There is also a bigger target on the horizon. With the World Cup now edging closer, Maddison still has a slim opportunity to force his way back into the England picture. Competition for attacking midfield places remains fierce, but a fully-fit Maddison offers creativity and technical quality few English players can match.

Maddison will be so important for Spurs for their final two games of the season. Their safety in the Premier League is not guaranteed, as they travel to London rivals Chelsea for their final away game of the campaign, before hosting European chasing Everton on the final day of the season.

With Spurs only sat two points above West Ham, last night will have felt like a missed opportunity dropping points to an already safe Leeds, however Roberto De Zerbi will hope that Maddison can make an impact in the final two games of the season.
