Kwesi Appiah Reflects On His Time At Cambridge United
Kwesi Appiah has been up and down the English footballing divisions with various clubs, one being Cambridge United over the course of two loan spells. The Cambridge cult hero sat down with us to talk about what it was like during his time at the club.
The Cambridge United love affair first began in 2013. Kwesi spent from September to December at the club. He was on fire in those four months, playing in 14 matches across that time period. In that time, he found the back of the net 10 times as well as providing four assists to his teammates. His efforts helped Cambridge United achieve promotion from the National League and into League One, something that U’s fans will always remember.
“That initial one month loan obviously got extended and things went well. I really enjoyed it there, really really enjoyed it there.”
“Sadly, it had to come to end because it got to a point where it was seen from my parent club that I needed to take the next step.”
“I didn’t have any control over that decision and at the end of the day I’ve got to respect the wishes of my parent club as well.”
Kwesi then saw two more loan spells at Notts County and AFC Wimbledon respectively before heading back to Cambridge in June of 2014. By his own admission the opportunity to play for parent club Crystal Palace wasn’t there at the time with him not getting the game time that he wanted. Both Southend United and Cambridge were fighting for him to join them for a loan spell. Given the love that Kwesi was shown over the course of his Cambridge tenure, it wasn’t a difficult decision.
“I had a few phone calls with a few managers, I didn’t even really need to speak to the Cambridge manager you know what I mean because he knew how I felt for the club, and I knew how he and the club felt towards me.”
“I went to Wembley for the Playoff Final , the FA Trophy Final. I was still with the club along the whole remainder of the season even though I was on loan at Notts Country and Wimbledon… I ended up being where I wanted to be.”
When looking back at his time at Cambridge, Kwesi only has good memories. Amassing 40 appearances, 18 goals and eight assists, Kwesi Appiah will go down as a cult hero in the hearts of all those involved in Cambridge United.
