Keepers Save the Day and Reds Everywhere: La Liga Matchday 37 Sunday Review Highlights Scores and Results

We are into the penultimate match week of the Spanish topflight season. With the League winners and Champions League spots already wrapped up, we are down to the final game week to see who will be joining Real Oviedo in the second division of Spanish football. We also wait to see what clubs will be occupying the Europe and Conference League positions.

Athletic Club 1-1 Celta Vigo

This was really a must win for Celta Vigo as the 3 points would’ve confirmed their place in the Europa League for next season. However, that didn’t go to plan, and they will now need to fight and see if they can keep that dream alive in the final match week.

The game started perfectly for the visitors who scored in the 4th minute thanks to Williot Swedberg. However, that goal would be one of their last attacks. After that it was wave after wave of Athletic Club. They had 13 shots in the first half and 6 on target, however, they couldn’t beat Ionut Radu. That was until the 52nd minute when finally, Inaki Williams would put something past him to level up the game and that would be how the game ended.

It was a lucky escape for Celta Vigo as they only managed 3 shots in the 90 minutes generating 0.15 xG. In comparison the hosts had 27 shots with a 2.84 xG. They will be hoping for a better performance in the final game of the season.

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Girona

This was a massive game for Girona. They are almost going down, and they need to try and get any points that they physically can. However, against one of the best clubs in the league, that was always going to be difficult and unfortunately, they need to do everything they can in the final game week to survive.

It was a game that took a bit to get going however, in the 21st minute Ademola Lookman would score as Griezmann would provide his 100th assists for the club in his final home game.

Girona will be annoyed as they played very well making a lot of chances and dominating more of the game. However, they couldn’t find a way to beat Jan Oblak and they have 1 chance to try and survive.

Elche 1-0 Getafe

Getafe will be very disappointed with this result. They are on the cusp of a place in Europe next season, and this game didn’t do them any favours. They struggled to get any value from anything and in the end lost a man who would’ve been vital in the final game week.

It took 19 minutes before the normally rock-solid defence of Getafe was broken down as Victor Chust would allow Elche to take the lead. Things only got worse for the visitors as Djene would see a straight red. Thankfully, nothing else was added to the pain, however, they now have a very difficult mountain to climb to keep their place in Europe.

Levante 2-0 Mallorca

This was the game that had the most riding on it this match week. Both sides at the bottom of the table, both needing everything to try and survive. This was shown in the game, 2 red cards as tempura boiled over and, in the end, Levante just had to much for Mallorca.

Carlos Espi was the man who would strike first in the 32nd minute putting the home side ahead. Then there wouldn’t be much else of note until the 85th minute. This would be where both Johan Mojica and Roger Brugue would see red cards for violent conduct. Just 2 minutes later the home side would have their second and push themselves away from relegation.

Osasuna 1-2 Espanyol

This is a game that Osasuna would’ve liked to win as 3 points would’ve confirmed their survival. However, it wasn’t meant to be today. While they are more than likely safe, there still is a very small chance that they could go down, although that chance in nearly 0.

The game started perfectly for the visitors as Carlos Romero would put them ahead. However, 4 minutes into the second half and that lead would be extinguished as Victor Munoz would level the game up. The visitors did respond perfectly as just 4 minutes later the lead was reignited and this time they held out and took all 3 points.

Rayo Vallecano 0-1 Deportivo Alaves

This was a game that didn’t have anything left riding on it. The home side has already had their time in the Spanish topflight ended and the visitors didn’t have anything to play for. This was seen on the pitch and by the result.

The game was won in the 17th minute as Toni Martinez would score and after that neither side really caused any more issues.

Real Sociedad 3-4 Valencia

This was the game of the day. 7 goals scored and a red card this had everything that people love about football. The game went the way of the visitors who will now have one eye on an outside chance of getting into Europe next season.

It was a very quick start as the home side took the lead with just 3 minutes on the clock. 5 minutes later and that lead was gone as Javier Guerra would score. We would then have some down time before the 22nd minute where the visitors this time took the lead as Hugo Duro scored.

The second half took a bit longer for the action to start, however, at the hour mark Cesar Tarrega would put the ball into his own net levelling the game up. Only 3 minutes later and the hosts had another and once again took the lead. The visitors looked like they had lost hope and that only became worse when they lost Eray Comert to a straight red card. Then in the 89th minute the visitors somehow had the game levelled before the 93rd minute saw it, their second comeback and this time it was the goal that would win them the game taking all 3 points.

Sevilla 0-1 Real Madrid

This was another game where ultimetly their seasons are over. Real Madrid would have needed this win more especially after all the drama around them as of recent and they managed to do exactly that.

It was a quiet game, and it was decided when Vinicius Jr managed to score in the 15th minute. That was enough, neither side managed to create much and in the end 1 goal was enough to take the points.

Barcelona 3-1 Real Betis

We end the weekend off with the League winners adding 3 more points to their tally in what has become a routine victory. Neither side really has much to play for with both having won the league and qualified for Champions League.

The first goal was seen just before the half hour mark as Raphinha would send a free kick curling into the bottom left corner. He would then add a second in the 62nd minute. However, it wasn’t smooth sailing as Isco would convert a penalty to make it 2-1. Joao Cancelo put to bed any fears Barcelona fans might have had as he made it 3-1 winning the game for the champions.
