Miserable Leicester Await Premier League Trip

As Leicester City sit at their lowest tabled position in the club’s history. We look ahead to their Carabao Cup fixture against Ipswich Town, away at Portman Road on Tuesday Night.

Following a 2-1 loss to Burton Albion on Saturday, Leicester City sit 18th in League One, the lowest position the club has ever been placed, in the third tier of English football. Looking to bounce back from defeat, Russell Martin’s side travel to the east coast to face Premier League side, Ipswich Town.

In the previous round, the foxes beat League Two side, Northampton Town 1-0 at home from a Caleb Okoli headed goal. The Italian has since come under fire for his defensive performances against Burton Albion and away at Notts County.

The central defender has recently been linked with a move away from the King Power in hopes of returning to the Italian national team, something he is unlikely to do whilst playing League One football.

The Tractor Boys play hosts after a 2-1 win to Sunderland in their first Premier League fixture since being promoted back from the Championship last season, with goals from new signing Emersonn and former Sunderland winger, Jack Clarke. The East Coast outfit enter the cup in round 2 alongside all other premier league sides who haven’t qualified for European competitions.

Familiar Foes

This fixture sees the return of multiple players back to Ipswich Town. The recent transfers of Conor Chaplin and Wes Burns fresh in the mind of many Town fans. Chaplin and Burns were heavily influential in the League One side that finished the 2022/23 season with 98 points, narrowly finishing in 2nd place and scoring a combined 101 league goals.

Momentum from the previous season continued and Ipswich came second in the 2023/24 season of the Championship, only behind Leicester City who won the league. Part of the Kieran McKenna side that achieved back-to-back promotions, Burns and Chaplin appeared a combined 338 times for Ipswich, scoring 85 times for the club, both with stints in the Premier League side the following season.

It will be highly likely that the pair will be welcomed back to Portman Road after their glistering careers at the club, a fan favourite pairing.

Two players donning the Ipswich blue have featured heavily for the Foxes are Kasey McAteer and Abdul Fatawu.

The Ghanian winger, Abdul Fatawu made 100 appearances for the Midlands based club, scoring 16 times including a 70-yard strike from behind the halfway, in Leicester’s home fixture against Ipswich Town last season.

Fatawu signed for the newly promoted Ipswich side from Leicester City in this summer transfer window for the fee of £20m.

Kasey McAteer made 121 appearances for Leicester City in the senior, u21 and u18 sides. He had joined City’s academy at the age of 8 and signed for Ipswich in the summer of 2025 for a fee around £12m.

In the last 10 meetings between the clubs, Leicester City have won 5, 4 matchups have been 1-1 draws and you’d have to go all the way back to 2013 to when Ipswich last beat Leicester in a 1-0 defeat.

A combined 20-7 scoreline from the most recent 10 fixtures help to predict a high scoring bout, hopefully as history alludes to a Leicester win.

As Ipswich have a difficult few fixtures ahead in the Premier League of Manchester United (a), Liverpool (h) and Crystal Palace (a), I believe that Gary O’Neil will look to rest his core and after the abysmal defeat on Saturday, I predict that Russell Martin will look to find some momentum and form upsetting the Tractor Boys with a cupset.

Taking into consideration the past fixtures between the two sides, recent form and heavy delusion, I predict a 1-1 draw with Leicester winning on penalties.

I see Martin looking to mix things up after the dreadful showing against Burton Albion and my predicted lineup reflects that.
