Leicester City have a chance to make history

22/04/24 05:13

Leicester City welcome Southampton on Tuesday for what could be an historic match. If Leicester are able to secure all three points against the Saints, and Leeds United lose their Monday night match at Middlesborough, the Foxes will be a Premier League side once again.

But for Southampton, who are still in with a chance at securing their place in the English top-flight for next season, it will mean just as much.

Leicester beat West Bromwich Albion on the weekend thanks to goals from Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy. The result put them on 91 points, top of the EFL Championship table and two points above Ipswich Town. In 3rd is Leeds on 87 points, whilst Southampton have 84 in 4th.

However, with three games to go for most sides, the Sky Bet Championship could be, still all to play for.

Leicester City vs Southampton stats

In terms of head-to-head stats, the last time these two met, Leicester battered the Saints 4-1 away from home. Vardy, Kasey McAteer, Ndidi and Stephy Madididi all scored, as Samuel Edozie scored for Southampton.

Before this season though, back in the Premier League last season, Southampton did the double over Leicester. Winning 2-1 at the start of the campaign, and 1-0 in March of 2023.

This season, no side in the Championship have scored more goals than Southampton (85), who are joint with Ipswich Town. Meanwhile, Leicester have the second highest, with 81.

Veteran striker Vardy is still going strong as Lecister top goal scorer this campaign. At the age of 37, he has 17 goals in 34 games. Behind him is Mavididi on 13 successful strikes, whilst Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has 12.

Dewsbury-Hall is leading the line when it comes to assists for Leicester. He has 14 so far, whilst second to that count is Abdul Fatawu with 11.

Southampton, now of course under the management of Russel Martin, suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City on Saturday, making automatic promotion back to the Premier League much harder. After Leicester, they face a tough home tie against Stoke City, before a final day trip to promotion rivals Leeds.

So far this season, Southampton’s top scorer is Adam Armstrong, who has 20 goals in a whopping 46 games played this season. Che Adams is second with 18, and Ryan Fraser 3rd with 8.

Armstrong also has the most assists for the Saints in 2023/24, with 13. Meanwhile, Stuart Armstrong has 7 assists.
