Leicester Looked Doomed While Millwall Look Prem Bound: Football Park's EFL Championship Roundup GW 43

Today we are back with the Championship as we get into the final few games of the season. This is the part of the season where every point counts. After we saw Coventry get promoted last night, we see teams look to gain that second place in the automatic promotion. However, we also see teams at the other end of the table look to try and gain some ground to survive.

Today we saw 10 matches played and saw 23 goals scored. We will be covering all of that and more here at Football Park.

Derby County 1-0 Oxford United

This is a match where both sides needed a result. For Oxford it was a chance to get out of the relegation zone and get some space between them and the other teams around them. However, for Derby it was their chance to keep pace in the fight for the play off places.

It was a game where not much happened as the game was won with a single goal. This goal came in the 22nd minute thanks to Jaydon Banel. It was a fast break that was ended by that man as he had a shot just from the edge of the box that found the bottom left corner.

It was a game that Derby deserved to win having more possession and chances. They will now be hoping to keep this up as they fight for a top 6 finish. As for Oxford they now have a mountain to climb to stay up.

Millwall 2-0 Queens Park Rangers

This was a game that had one side still fighting in the league against a side that no longer has much left to play for. Millwall will be desperate to finally get promoted and they are still able to achieve the place in the automatic promotion places.

It started off very quick as Millwall took the lead in the 3rd minute with Derek Mazou-Sacko. Then in the 17th minute Millwall doubled their lead as Camiel Neghli made it 2-0. This would be how the game ended, and they will be more than happy with that result.

It was a game that really showed 2 stories. QPR wasn’t there and it showed. After their strong recent form, they were poor today. They did little to nothing to trouble Millwall. However, Millwall did the job and showed why they are looking to be a Premier League side next season.

Portsmouth 1-0 Leicester City

This was a vital game for Leicester as they look to still be a Championship team next season. They currently sit second from bottom and need all the points they can get to even have a slight chance to stay in the Championship next season.

The game started off evenly with neither side really showing much quality as Portsmouth just edged out the xG and chances. However, the second half was a Leicester half having more of the ball and much more chances making 0.98 xG. However, this half showed their season as in the 63rd minute they were behind. Ibane Bowat made it 1-0 to Portsmouth and that would end up being the winning goal.

It was a goal that looks to now have sent Leicester to League One. They need 8 points from their last 3 games and in those 3 games they will face 2 of the top 6. It looks very likely we will see back-to-back relegations for them.

Bristol City 2-4 Norwich City

This was the game of the afternoon. Both sides not having much left to play for as they sit outside the promotion zone and won’t be able to close the gap on the top sides. However, it didn’t stop these sides putting a show on.

The goals started very quick as after just 2 minutes Sam Morsy made it 1-0 to the home side. It would then take 49 minutes to be played before we saw a second goal scored. Finally, in the 51st minute Norwich levelled the game with Mohamed Toure scoring. 19 minutes later he would add a second to allow the visitors to take the lead. Then 5 minutes later he completed his hat trick making it 3-1 to Norwich. Jose Cordoba ended the game making it 4-1. Sam Bell got one back for the home side however, at that point it was a consolation goal.

Hull City 1-1 Birmingham City

This was a vital game for Hull. A win and they would look certain to make that top 6 places, and they could even join the conversation for the automatic places.

The game started off perfect for Hull as they took the lead in the 24th minute thanks to Joe Gelhardt. However, after that Hull was wasteful. They didn’t take any of their chances missing all 3 of their big chances they made. Birmingham punished them in the 77th minute as Tomoki Iwata made it 1-1 and that it how it would end.

It will feel like a massive chance waisted for Hull having had such a good chance to get clear and look to make some space in the top 6. However, ultimately, they weren’t able to take their chances.

Preston North End 0-2 West Bromwich Albion

This was a vital game for West Brom as they look to survive this season. They need all the points they can get to make the gap between them and the bottom 3 as big as possible. A win in this game would allow them to be 5 points clear of Oxford and able to think about staying up.

The scoring was opened in the 11th minute as Josh Maja made it 1-0 to the visitors. It would stay this way until the end of the first half. It was a more then deserved win as they made a lot of chances while limiting their opposition. Then in the 77th minute Daryl Dike would double their lead and win them the game.

It was a huge 3 points for them and the 3 points that could see them stay as a Championship side next season.

Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Charlton Athletic

This was one of those games you get towards the end of the season. Neither side has much to play for anymore Charlton look to be safe sitting 6 points clear while Sheffield Wednesday are already down.

The first half didn’t see much happen. However, the same can’t be said for the second as after just 4 minutes of the half starting the visitors had the lead as Matt Godden would find the back of the net. However, Sheffield who had been making chances finally had one pay off in the 76th minute. Gabriel Otegbayo would level the game up and that would be how it ended.

Swansea City 1-2 Southampton

This was a must win for Southampton. They are still looking to fight for a place in the automatic places, however, will want to keep their form going for if they play in the play offs. A win would take them into touching distance of the automatic places and make their place in the top 6 almost certain.

It didn’t start well for Southampton as they went behind in the 20th minute as Marko Stamenic would put Swansea ahead. Southampton didn’t look up to it in the first half, they struggled to make chances, and barley challenged the Swansea keeper. However, the second half wasn’t the same. After just 12 minutes the game was level thanks to Shea Charles. Then they finally stole the lead in the 90th minute as Cameron Archer found the back of the net for 2-1.

It was a vital 3 points for the Saints as they look to fight for automatic promotion and keep their form going. They will hope they can win the rest of their games to have the best chance of getting into that second automatic promotion place.

Watford 0-2 Sheffield United

Once again this was a game where both teams season are all but over as neither can be relegated nor promoted. However, it was a game that meant that they could go level on points if Sheffield United won.

The first half didn’t see much action with neither side really challenging the keeper much. However, in the second half it took just 5 minutes for the visitors to take the lead thanks to Patrick Bamford. Just 9 minutes later he had his second making it 2-0. That is how the game would end, and Sheffield United would go level on points with Watford.

Wrexham 2-0 Stoke City

Wrexham who are still looking to make history need to do everything they can to make sure that they win every remaining game to try and make the top 6. As we enter the final 3 games this would be one of their chances to make up ground.

Wrexham would break the dead lock in the 31st minute when George Thomason would find the back of the net directly from the corner. It was an incredible goal and one that he wasn’t done celebrating before Wrexham had their second. As just 2 minutes later Josh Windass would make it 2-0.

It will be 3 massive points for Wrexham especially if they are able to fight into the top 6 and qualify for the play offs.
