Liam Rosenior Sacked By Chelsea

Liam Rosenior has been dismissed as Chelsea Head Coach today, after an awful run of form in the Premier League heavily jeopardised the Blues' chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season.

Calum McFarlane is expected to take up his post on an interim basis whilst Chelsea decide on a successor for the 41-year-old, who was in-post at Stamford Bridge for a little over four months after the surprise exit of Enzo Maresca.

After a heavy 3-0 defeat by Brighton in the Premier League, which marked a run of five straight losses without a goal for Chelsea, the Blues hierarchy have been forced into a decision with the club almost certain to miss out on Champions League football next season, and potentially running the risk of missing out on Europe altogether - just six points separate 7th-placed Chelsea from 14th-placed Newcastle United, with Everton, Brentford, Bournemouth and Sunderland all holding the opportunity to collectively leapfrog the Blues should they win at the weekend.

Rosenior's Ill-Fated Blue Spell

Liam Rosenior came into a Chelsea side in need of stability, with the fallout between the club's hierarchy and previous manager Enzo Maresca casting a storm cloud over what was looking to be a hopeful campaign in West London.

Things got off to a bright start as part of his reign at the club, picking up seven wins from his first nine fixtures including a famous 3-2 win over Napoli in the Champions League group stage.

The damage got started both in Europe and away from the field. A bruising 8-2 defeat over two legs to Parisian giants PSG knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League, and sparked off a terrible run of form that saw the club lose their next five Premier League fixtures in-a-row without scoring a single goal, all whilst off-pitch drama surrounding Enzo Fernandez led to an internal suspension for the star midfielder and threatened the stability of the group.

Liam Rosenior said goodbye to his staff and players at the end of the Brighton game and didn’t even do a post-match team talk. Callum McFarlane is in line to take over temporarily as the club decide on a successor.

Their 3-0 loss to Brighton on Tuesday night compounded the misery. Chelsea were leggy, totally bereft of ideas and completely outclassed by the Seagulls, who dismissed the Blues thanks to goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck. Chelsea barely put up a fight in the game, having just six shots with none of them hitting the target.

The result saw Brighton overtake Chelsea into 6th for a hypothetical space in the Europa League for next season, and made Rosenior's position in charge of the team grow untenable. The former Derby County and Hull City manager pulled no punches in his post-match comments, attributing blame to the players and calling the mentality of his squad into question.

Chelsea are expected, as they did after the departure of Maresca, to appoint Calum McFarlane on a temporary basis in charge of the team. The 40-year-old looked over two games as Blues boss back in January - a 1-1 draw with Manchester City and a 2-1 loss away to Fulham.
