Ligue 2 Left Back Set for Championship Bidding War

EFL Left Back Crisis Continues with Ligue 1 Star the Latest Target

The position of left back has so far been one of great importance this January transfer window, with a host of sides looking to mitigate injuries and lack of squad depth in that position this month.

Previously, Aston Villa-turned Swindon loanee Finley Munroe was a hot target for Championship sides Preston and Blackburn Rovers, with the 20-year-old's superb form in League One more than warranting a move up the leagues. However, at present, no move for him has materialised.

However, Blackburn and Preston, along with Hull City, have shifted their focus elsewhere, with Troyes and Comoros international left-back Ismael Boura coming under increasing interest.

Who is Ismael Boura?

An unheard-of name in English football, Boura is much more widely known in the French domestic scene, where he has played for his entire professional career.

Starting his career at current table-toppers RC Lens, Bouna steadily rose through the ranks at the club, and after making 53 appearances for the B team across three seasons, the 25-year-old eventually broke into the senior squad in 2020/21, making 21 appearances across the season.

Though he was solid, he was also unspectacular, and it was clear a loan move was needed to further develop his game - the following campaign he was sent to Le Havre, and managed to net his first senior goal on the north coast of France.

However, injuries hampered him, and he only managed 17 appearances throughout the campaign. In spite of this, Lens still gave him another opportunity to nail down a starting spot at the club, as Bouna made 11 appearances the following campaign - once again though, his form was not of the desired standard, and at the end of the campaign, he was allowed to depart on a free transfer to Troyes.

It was here that Boura finally started to pick up some momentum. Thriving in the French second division, he assisted two goals in 41 appearances in his debut campaign for the club, and doubled that tally last year.

This season, he has continued in the same vein, assisting two goals while also netting his first goal for the club, while also sitting joint top of the club's average rating standings with an average of 7.4, according to FotMob.

With that in mind, it is easy to see why he is so sought after by Championship clubs - his experience of both the first and second tiers of France will be valuable, and his end-to-end energy and unerring quality in attack will bring whoever secures his signature an extra dimension in attack.

Valued at a shade under £2 million, Boura would be a relatively cheap signing - however, with more clubs joining the chase with each passing day, a bidding war looks likely to ensue, and the interested parties could potentially force the fee up to double that in a bid to put off their rivals.
