Liverpool must keep up the pace at all costs

Everton welcome Liverpool on Wednesday for what is the 295th Merseyside Derby in history. Despite the Blues' relegatoion struggles this season though, Liverpool are still juggling the pressure of a title race. Just one slip up, could prove fatal for either of these teams.

The last time these two met, it was Liverpool that ran out ast 2-0 winners at Anfield. In fact, Everton haven’t beaten Liverpool in their last five meetings. They last beat their rivals when Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson scored to secure a 2-0 away win under manager Carlo Ancelotti, in February of 2021. Before which, Everton hadn’t beaten the Reds since 2010.

Everton’s top goal scorer for the 2023/24 campaign is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with only six goals this season. That’s joint with Abdoulaye Doucoure, whilst Beto has scored 5.

Dwight McNeil has the most assists for Everton this season, he’s provided six so far. Behind him is Jack Harrison on 3.

The top scorer for Liverpool this season is Mohamed Salah with 24 goals in 38 games. Salah alone has scored more goals this season than Everton’s top five scorers combined. Darwin Nunez is behind that with 18 conversions, Diogo Jota has 14 alongside Cody Gakpo.

When it comes to assists, Nunez is top of that list. He’s provided 13 goals so far. Behind that is Salah on 12, and Alexander-Arnold on 9.

Everton, alongside their several poitns deductions this season, currently sit 16th in the Premier League. A win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday means they're now five points clear of danger, with five games left, and a game in hand on a few relegation rivals.

Liverpool meanwhile, have bounced back from last season and are surging for the title. Determined to go out on a high for Klopp's final season, they're second in the league, behind Arsenal in first only by goal difference.
