Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur | Match Preview

30/04/24 20:06

Liverpool host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield this weekend with the hopes of getting back into a title race that may be drifting further and further away from them. Spurs on the other hand will look to push on to a top four finish.

Liverpool have certainly slipped up in the title race in recent weeks. It now looks as though they are out of it. However, sitting in third place on 75 points, five off the top, there is a chance they can still get back into it - so long as the sides above them drop points and they pick up vital wins in games like this.

Tottenham on the other hand have picked up 60 points thus far this year. Currently in 5th spot they are now a massive seven points off Aston Villa in fourth. A win is vital if they are going to push on and pull back into those Champions League spots.

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur Stats

Jurgen Klopp’s side, as mentioned, aren’t in the best of form at the moment. In their last game they picked up a devastating draw away at West Ham in a game they should have won. 28 shots on goal and over 70% of the possession shows just how dominant they were but it just wasn’t enough to get past the Hammers.

Fans will be hoping that Mohamed Salah and Klopp are on the same page again after appearing to have a heated confrontation on the touchline during the game. Klopp suggested after the game that it was sorted but after Salah refused to comment on the situation we just don’t know how good their relationship is right now.

Spurs’ last game also ended in devastating fashion. Losing in the North London Derby against Arsenal. They came close having clawed two goals back but being three behind at half time certainly won’t be a good look in the eyes of Ange Postecoglu. Avoiding that again will be key at Anfield.

The Reds have a very good record against Spurs. 89 wins from 182 meetings in comparison to Tottenham’s just 49 wins. Alongside that, Tottenham have won just one of the last 13 meetings between the two sides.

Luckily enough for them, that one win happened earlier this season. Back in September, Spurs beat Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A Joel Matip 96th minute own goal won it for Spurs against nine man Liverpool. This something they will want to recreate this weekend.

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur Players To Watch

Arguably the player to watch for Liverpool is in fact Salah. As mentioned, the incident on the weekend could make for interesting viewing this weekend - especially for outside fans looking in. If he plays the game he will surely be keen to turn around his recent poor form that led to him being dropped in the first place. However, if he doesn’t play/start his future at the club will be even more in question than it is now. An interesting story for sure.

As for Tottenham, it is hard to look past anyone other than Heung Min Son. Scoring in the last game from the spot Son normally is the man to pop up when Spurs need him. And at this desperate stage of the season he will surely be looked upon as the man to step up for the club.

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Joel Matip and Thiago are confirmed now to be out for the rest of the season for the hosts so will not feature here. Luckily enough though there is a chance that a number of players could return. Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley all could make their comebacks this week.

As for Postecoglu’s side, Pedro Porro and Richarlison both look as though they will be available but they will most likely be without Destiny Udogie, Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon who look as though they will be out for the remainder of the campaign.
