How On Earth Did Brighton Land Vuskovic?

You all heard the noise about this fella, Luka Vuskovic.

He was out in the Bundesliga on loan from Premier League big-wigs Tottenham Hotspur and was lighting the German top flight up with his performances for Hamburger SV last term. Well, as much as a centre-back can 'light up' something, anyway.

But whatever way you shake it, at the ages of just 18 and 19 this Croatian defender was showing some serious tekkers on his European adventure, much averse to the well-documented domestic struggles of his parent English side, who bought him from Hajduk Split in his home nation only a year ago, in June 2025.

He was earmarked as a proper blue chip prospect and had Tottenham fans dubbing him as the next big thing in the sport.

The next minute, they all hate the kid and cannot wait for him to leave the club. And then, a minute after that, a big move to a giant of the sport that was linked with him like Bayern and Manchester City didn't transpire either, and he instead headed further south and joined Brighton before their return to Europe. Eh?

No disrespect to Brighton, but a player of his apparent calibre heading there over some of the mammoth names that were linked with the 19-year-old beforehand sits as a touch surprising. And the fact that Tottenham fans are only too happy to let him go may come as a shock when it first meets the eye, but the underlying reason may make it rather reasonable from the old spuds.

Vuskovic is leaving Tottenham in esteemed company - only Harry Kane and Gareth Bale have been flogged for higher fees than the Croatian talent, who is joining Brighton for a lofty £50m.

It seems that Tottenham, in agreement with their fans, did not deem the teenager as 'ready' for Premier League football, especially after his lacklustre performance against England at the ongoing World Cup, wherein Croatia were eventually dumped out by Portugal.

They have already reinforced a defence that was pretty miserable last season as Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League and barely avoided a shock relegation at the expense of West Ham - Marcos Senesi arrived on a free after leaving Bournemouth, and Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton as well, giving the Seagulls the means and the financial muscle to go for Vuskovic in the end as well.

But make no mistake about it - this is a hell of a pickup for Brighton.

Despite Hamburg finishing a lowly 13th in the Bundesliga last term, that did not come for a want of trying for the teenager. The 19-year-old was regarded as one of the standout young talents in the entire division, and he has quickly risen to international acclaim with six caps and one goal for his nation already.

After the releases of Adam Webster and Joel Veltman and the aforementioned sale of van Hecke, Brighton were in need of a pick-me-up at the back, and by God have they got one.

Why Do Tottenham Fans Hate Vuskovic?

It's been a divisive topic for many a Lilywhite this summer - stick or twist with one of the world's most exciting talents?

Well, with the given fresh faces in the Tottenham back line already joining a pack with the likes of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Kevin Danso, minutes looked like they were going to be at a premium for the young Croatian. As such, he and his reps were actively pushing for a move away to a club that could guarantee a more consistent starting berth, and Tottenham and their fans did not like that one bit.

Their goal was another loan, likely into the Premier League with this structure being suggested to Brighton, but Vuskovic wanted out in no uncertain terms after just one year on Tottenham's books, and with that whole year being spent in Germany instead.

And this split the fans somewhat. A large number of fans aren't exactly over the moon to see the Croatian depart, given his esteemed potential, and they were scathing in voicing their frustrations.

One fan wrote: “Goodbye arrogant child, we will all be praying on your downfall.”

Another added: “Not really arsed, he does not respect us.”

A third commented: “I will hate-watch with every breath he takes.”

Another supporter was equally frustrated with the deal, stating: “That is stupid man, swapping him for Van Hecke is silly.”

However, not all fans were against the move. One said: “Sell-on package is nice. Not overjoyed with this though tbh.” A final supporter shared a more positive note on the deal, however, saying: “[We] basically swapped him for Van Hecke. One is Premier League proven, one is potential. Pretty good business if you ask me.”

We will more than certainly soon see if Vuskovic can live up to the hype - Brighton have their track record of establishing young stars into prominent players, so he's certainly in a place that could work to help him get there.

The door is not shut, however, on his time at Tottenham. The shrewd operators have a 'matching' clause, which allows them to match any rival future bids for his services and get first dibs on him, but will get a 20% chunk of any profit made on a sale to someone else.
