Lyon Goalkeeper Eyed by Hull City and West Brom

Having a commanding goalkeeper between the sticks is the key to a successful EFL Championship campaign. However, given that most shot-stoppers keep their eye out for top-flight moves, the pull of England’s second tier is limited.

The presence of a quality goalkeeper cannot be understated - Coventry City have highlighted that this campaign, with the loan signing of Carl Rushworth from Brighton proving a stroke of genius. His cool, calm, collected demeanour at the back has helped the Sky Blues go from contenders to Championship favourites, and only four sides have conceded fewer than their 29.

Now, Hull City and West Brom are in search of their own solution to their goalkeeping conundrum, and may have found the perfect answer in Lyon backup stopper Remy Descamps.

Who is Remy Descamps?

At 29 years old, the Frenchman is at the peak of his powers and, understandably, wants to be more than just a backup in the French top flight. While Dominik Greif is number one at the Groupama Stadium, Descamps has had to stand in on seven occasions this season and, despite limited gametime, has impressed.

Managing five clean sheets in his seven games so far, Descamps has exhibited that he has what it takes to play more regular football, and his wide-ranging experience across the top two divisions of France means that he has an abundance of familiarity with a vast array of styles and approaches.

Experience is king in the Championship, and with clubs such as Lyon and PSG on his CV, Descamps has long been involved at sides with a winning mentality. If he can bring this mentality to the Championship, he could turn his new club's fortunes on their head.

Croatian stopper Ivor Pandur is currently first choice at Hull City, but in 25 games this season, he has returned a meagre six clean sheets, which, despite Hull’s seventh-place standing, is certainly holding them back.

Meanwhile, at 18th-placed West Brom, Joshua Griffiths is currently first-choice keeper. However, after a string of poor performances, he was dropped to the bench for seven straight matches, replaced by Josh Wildsmith, before being reinstated last time out against Leicester. Keeping just four clean sheets this season, he is no more secure than Pandur.

It appears that the number one shirt at both sides is up for grabs, and should either end up signing Descamps, he would be expected to immediately step into the starting eleven.

Likened to Asmir Begovic in stature, Descamps has been described as a little slow on his feet, but his experience more than makes up for this, with his positioning and anticipation virtually flawless.

Also capable of playing out from the back, he appears to fit the template of a starting Championship goalkeeper, and with a market value of just £1.2 million, he could end up being a bargain buy.
