Maguire, Maddison and More to Miss Out on the England Squad

Reports have been coming out all day regarding Gareth Southgate’s final 26 man squad for the Euros which is expected to be named on Friday.

There has been a lot of speculation about who will be missing and who will travel to Germany and it appears as though most of them could be right.

Let’s have a look at the players who are expected to be dropped from Southgate’s Euros plans.

James Maddison

It was announced on Wednesday evening that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison had left the England training camp after he was told that he would not be heading to the Euros. This was despite reassurances that he would play in England’s final warm up game against Iceland on Friday.

Maddison took to social media to say that he was ‘devastated’ to be cut from the squad.

The 27 year old has not always seen eye to eye with Southgate and did not make a single England appearance between 2019-2022 before being named in the squad for the 2022 World Cup only to sit on the bench for the entire tournament.

Curtis Jones and Jarrel Quansah

The uncapped Liverpool duo will not make their first appearances for the national team at the Euros as they too have been axed from Southgate’s squad.

Both of the young players have had good seasons at Anfield but their time for the Three Lions will have to wait.

23-year-old Jones has made 20 appearances for the England under-21 squad so it seems only natural that he will soon be with the senior squad.

Quansah on the other hand only made his debut for the under-21s last year and has played for them just four times.

Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish

Probably the two biggest names to be cut, Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish were both at the last Euros and the last World Cup where they were important players for Southgate.

If it were up to him, Maguire would probably be in the squad for this Euros, but due to a calf injury, he has been forced to miss out.

Grealish on the other hand has seen limited game time for Manchester City this season, which has seen him drop down the pecking order under the England boss.

It now seems likely that Eberechi Eze will head to the tournament instead of the Manchester City man, especially after Eze’s electric performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier in the week.

Unconfirmed

While it has not been officially confirmed yet, James Trafford and Jarrad Branthwaite are likely to be the other two players from the initial 33-man squad that will miss out on the Euros.
