Man United Centre Back Set to Join Former Team Mate at Fiorentina

England Hero Tipped to Leave England with Italian Sides Eyeing Move

Over the years, countless former Premier League players have made the jump across the continent and over the Alps to Italy in a bid to revive their careers.

Just a few players who have made a success of that particular move include Romelu Lukaku, Davide Zappacosta and Ademola Lookman, as well as the Man United trio of Scott McTominay, Rasmus Hojlund, and David De Gea.

In recent hours, it appears that De Gea is set to be joined by one of his former teammates in Harry Maguire, who, after a rollercoaster six and a half seasons at Old Trafford, finally looks set to depart.

Failure or Success?

Maguire has been a divisive figure at the Theatre of Dreams since his £76.8 million move from Leicester City back in August 2019. Tipped as England's next great centre back, the former Sheffield United youth graduate showed signs of great promise, but his frequent lapses in judgement and concentration so often frustrated the Red Devils faithful.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Englishman made a string of high-profile errors which led to online abuse, a tarnished reputation, and frequent team sheets without his name present anywhere.

However, when Erik ten Haag was appointed, Maguire reacquired a semblance of the manager's trust and frequently captained the team, and this trust carried over into the recently deceased reign of Ruben Amorim.

Despite his up-and-down time at Man United, Maguire has been an ever-present in the England lineup since 2018, with Gareth Southgate and now Thomas Tuchel sticking to their guns despite his lack of periodical drop-offs at club level, and he has rewarded them, reaching World Cup semi- and quarter-finals as well as two European Championship finals.

Whatever people may say about Maguire, you cannot deny that his career has been successful - representing his country on 64 occasions and playing for one of the biggest clubs in the land by reputation, it could be argued that the centre has been on the receiving end of some unnecessary criticism throughout his career.

The English media had a significant hand in doing just that, and now it seems that Maguire is finally set to move beyond their reach with a move to Italy.

Fiorentina, at which former Premier League talents Edin Dzeko, Moise Kean and Tariq Lamptey also ply their trade, lead the race for the 32-year-old, but recently, Napoli and Inter Milan have also entered the fray for his signature, complicating negotiations for all three pursuing sides.

Valued at £10 million, Maguire would represent a bargain pick-up this January. However, with his contract expiring this summer, the Serie A trio would prefer to acquire the Englishman on a free contract in June - no doubt they are already negotiating terms with Maguire and his agent.

Though it is unclear where Maguire’s final destination is likely to be, what is clear is that we are potentially seeing the last of the centre-back in his home country, with his contract unlikely to be renewed.
