Manchester City vs Arsenal: The Last 5 Meetings

20/09/24 20:58

Sunday afternoon, the most anticipated Premier League match so far this season will take place in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium where the Premier League champions take on the runners up.

Manchester City take on Arsenal in what is expected to be a battle to remember. Two sides, veterans vs prospects, champions vs contenders, men vs boys.

A fixture of the two sides who are expected to battle it out for the Premier Leeague title yet again, will we see one side win their 5th Premier League title in a row, or will we see a resurrected side win their first Premier League title in over 20 years?

In what will be the 112th meeting between the two sides, let's take a look at the 5 fixtures between the two Premier League juggernauts of recent time.

31st March 2024 - Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal were able to shut out Premier League champions Manchester City in a feisty 0-0 draw. A fixture that knocked City off top spot in the Premier League and allowed Liverpool to ease through and sit top of the table.

City would eventually claw back and regain top place in the coming weeks and be the eventual winners and win their historical fourth Premier League trophy in a row.

Arsenal were strong defensively with David Raya and William Saliba being the stand out players for the Gunners and delivering for their club to prevent the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne from causing any damaging threat to their side.

8th October 2023 - Arsenal 1-0 Manchester City

An 86th minute winner from Gabriel Martinelli caused a major upset handing City a loss in one of the most crucial matches of the season. Also ending Arsenal’s 12 game losing streak to Manchester City in the Premier League, dating as far back as 2017.

A poor performance from Manchester City considering recent years and score lines but the prodigies sent their heroes packing and kissed them goodbye. A result that will be brought up for seasons to come. The new kids on the block beating the veterans who only know how to win.

Yet another strong performance from Saliba as well as Gabriel to be able to keep a robotic Erling Haaland and youthful Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden quiet just months after their night to never forget in Istanbul.

6th August 2023 - Arsenal 1 (4) - (1) 1 Manchester City

Arsenal and Manchester City went head to head in the FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium in a feisty affair that would see the game head to penalties. Arsenal came out victorious and comfortably won the tie and caused jaws to drop all around the country, leaving rivals in fear.

Surprising penalty misses from Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne allowed the Gunners to cruise to victory and send the old heads packing back to Manchester. A composed goal from Cole Palmer gave the Treble winners the lead but a goal in extra time from Arsenal substitute, leandro Trossard gave the Gunners hope and took the game to penalties.

It was a sign of things to come as Arsenal went on to take 4 points out of a possible 6 from the biggest club in the world.

26th April 2023 - Manchester City 4-1 Arsenal

Manchester City, in the most important months of the clubs history turned up and showed the new kids who's boss. A De Bruyne brace and Stones and Haaland in added time gifted City the easiest 3 points of the season.

City were well and truly on the form of their life, and so were Arsenal, but when you catch the Blues on form, they’re simply untouchable and no matter what you throw at them, City will destroy it and they proved that throughout the end stage of the 2022/23 season.

An injured Saliba had to watch from the sidelines as the Arsenal defence got dismantled and put to sleep from the jump. 2 assists and a goal from Haaland had Holding dancing like a robot.

15th February 2023 - Arsenal 1-3 Manchester City

The fixture that set the rest of the season in stone, Manchester City’s victory at the Emirates put them back on top of the Premier League table and with the form that they were in, they were guaranteed to win every game for the rest of the season.

Goals from Haaland, Grealish and De Bruyne. Haaland and De Bruyne taking their dogs out for their annual walk. An awful performance from Arsenal, a fortunate penalty allowed Saka to bring the score level before half time, but second half Man City, everyone knows what happens then and Arsenal fell heavy victims…twice.

This was the start of Arsenal’s crumble that season as they had lost 3 of their last 4 games in all competitions and it was their first home defeat since Brighton in April 2022. As for City, they did not lose another game that season and went on to complete the second ever treble winning season in English football history.
