A massive chance for Villa...Manchester City vs Aston Villa

01/04/24 07:52

Manchester City welcome Aston Villa this Wednesday evening, looking for their first win in the Premier League since the start of March, after their goalless draw with Arsenal last Sunday.

Villa could make history with victory at the Etihad this week, as they continue to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

This game gets underway at 8:15pm on Wednesday 3rd April.

Manchester City vs Aston Villa stats

In terms of head-to-head stats, the last time these two met this season, it was Aston Villa who stunned City at Villa Park. Leon Bailey was the only goalscorer in a 1-0 victory for Villa back in December 2023, back when the Villains were considered real title contenders.

That win in December was Villa's first win over Man City since 2013, when Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko's goals couldn't better strikes from Karim Ahmadi, Leandro Bacuna and Andi Weimann. Manchester City would then go on to not lose in their next 15 meetings with Villa, a streak that was ended by Bailey earlier on this season.

These two teams have played each other 180 times in their history, Manchester City winning 80 of those games, drawing 42 and losing 58.

If Aston Villa are able to beat Manchester City this week, it will be their first league double over them since the 1962/63 season.

So far this season, Manchester City's top goalscorer is of course Erling Haaland, who's casually netted 29 goals in 34 games. He also has 6 assists, meaning he's contributed more goals than he's played in 202/24.

Phil Foden can't be forgotten though, he's Manchester City's second top scorer this season with 18 goals. In third place for the Blues, is Julian Alvarez, with 16 successful strikes.

As for assists, Alvarez and Kevin De Bruyne are top of the list for the Premier League champions. Both of them have provided 16 goals in all competitions this season. Behind them is Foden, on 10 assists so far.

Haaland, Foden and Alvarez have all individually provided at least 28 goals this season. Crazy.

As for the visitors, Ollie Watkins is having a sensational season. in 2023/24, he has 22 goals and 10 assists in all competitions. Behind him is Leon Bailey with 12 goals and then Douglas Luiz on 10.

Watkins, Bailey and Luiz all have 10 assists for Villa this season. Second to that is summer signing Moussa Diaby on 8.

Manchester City vs Aston Villa Standings

After last season's historic treble winning season from the hosts this week, they're still on track to match that this time round. They're into the quarter-final of the Champions League, the semi-finals of the FA Cup and are 3rd in the Premier League, just three points behind the top.

However, it's no doubt that Sunday's 0-0 draw with Arsenal could be a huge blow for them in the title race. Over the years, seasons have been decided by single goals, leading to just a few more points than their rivals. With Liverpool on hot-form, Pep Guardiola's side will have to be flawless if they stand a chance at winning their 4th successive Premier League title.

For Villa, since Unai Emery arrived as manager it seems they've taken that next step in Premier League success. Qualifying for Europe last season was remarkable in itself, but being on the cusp of a Champions league spot this year is incredible.

Villa recently thrashed Ajax out of the Europa Conference League, and are now into the quarter-finals. A European trophy and Champions League qualification could make this season one of Villa's biggest in decades.
