Manchester City vs Liverpool: What Happened?

What on Earth happened to Liverpool today? While they haven’t been as good as they normally are this season, they still have been a strong side. However, today in the FA Cup Quarter finals they were at one of their low points. It wasn’t just Liverpool being bad though, Manchester City were truly at their best again. Everything they did was positive asking questions and causing problems all game.

The first goal started after Virgil Van Dijk took down Nico O’Reilly in the Liverpool box. It took a few seconds however, after a quick think the referee pointed to the spot. Penalty for Manchester City. Earling Haaland stepped up and slotted it into the bottom corner scoring his first of the afternoon and scoring his first goal in England since early February.

The lead would then be doubled as Rayan Cherki would slip the ball into the path of Antoine Semenyo on the right-hand side. He would spot some good movement in the box by Haaland who would see the balled squared to him. Haaland would glance his header into the right corner of the net to make it 2-0 just before halftime.

Liverpool would have the 15 minutes of half time and then only 4 more minutes before City looked to inflict more pain. In the 49th minute once again Cherki was causing problems. He would play another lovely pass into Semenyo this time he would have the chance. Going through 1 on 1 and he would place a lovely chip over Giorgi Mamardashvili to make it 3-0.

City had scored some beautiful goals this game however, their fourth was arguably the best of the lot. Jeremy Doku would cut inside before slipping a ball into the path of O’Reilly. He did well to get the ball out from under his feet before squaring the ball to the edge of the six-yard box. He would find Haaland there and once again he would smash his shot in. Into the crossbar and in for his hattrick and the first of the year.

Liverpool looked to have a massive chance to get at least one back with Matheus Nunes taking out Hugo Ekitike in the 63rd minute. Mo Salah would step up and try and see if he could claw one back. He would step up and smash it towards the bottom right corner. However, it was met by Trafford forcing it wide. This ultimately summed up Liverpool’s afternoon.

Overall, it was a game that showed just how good City could be on there day. Every player played to their best and was performing to the highest level and the score showed. Liverpool will not be heading home with only 1 trophy left in their sight. While City move onto the semi-finals with a possible domestic double or even treble on the table.
