Manchester United Set to Rival Liverpool for Portuguese Star

Goncalo Inacio has been attracting interest from Manchester United and Liverpool. Fabrizio Romano reported that both sides are monitoring the 22 year old ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Sporting centre half has re-emerged as a target for Liverpool after the reds first showed interest back in 2023. However, Manchester United have joined the race as they look to fill the void left by a departing Raphael Varane.

But, Liverpool could have been given a boost in pursuit of the Sporting defender as it is rumoured that the Red Devils have prioritised a right footed centre back.

United also hold a strong interest in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, which could open the door for Inacio at Liverpool.

Inacio, a left footed central defender, has been a mainstay on the left hand side of Ruben Amorim’s back line making 171 appearances since his debut in 2021, notching 15 goals making him a threat from set pieces.

It looked as if Inacio was Anfield bound when Amorim was favourite for the Liverpool managerial vacancy but his nonarrival has not deferred their attraction to the Portuguese international.

Inacio will be available for £51 million pounds courtesy of a release clause in his current deal.

With Matip already leaving the reds on a free this summer, Liverpool find themselves without a left sided centre back and have highlighted this position as one to improve in the coming months.

Alternatively, Manchester United are set to offer a proposal for the Portugal star. United are in desperate need for a centre back after a season which ended with Johnny Evans and Casemiro forming a defensive partnership due to a nightmare injury list for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The two time Portuguese league champion is also capable of filling in at left back, making him an ideal option to kickstart Jim Ratcliffe’s regime.

But the signing of Inacio might have be put on hold at the Theatre of Dreams as United must fill the gaping hole in the right hand side of their defence.

But they might not have time to wait on the Sporting Lisbon protector as Liverpool continue to watch Inacio.

For United, any transfer plans have been put on hold amid uncertainty over the future of Erik ten Hag, an end of season review is ongoing but is not yet resolved.
