Manchester United v Liverpool | Match Preview

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Sunday afternoon hoping to gain a valuable three points in the race for the Premier League title. United on the other hand will look to get back into the race for a top four spot after a disappointing result against Brentford.

This season has been filled with ups and downs for the hosts. It certainly hasn’t been up to the standard expected of them by most fans. Currently sitting in 6th place and 11 points away from Aston Villa in 4th means they are going to need an incredibly strong end to the season.

Their game against Brentford ending in a 1-1 draw won’t have helped either as it saw them get dominated by the 15th placed side. Mason Mount scored his first goal for the club to give them some hope however just two minutes later they were on the receiving end conceding to a Kristoffer Ajer strike.

Liverpool on the other hand need to keep their form alive if they are to have any shot at the Premier League title. Results went their way last weekend with them picking up an important against Brighton and Manchester City and Arsenal playing out a 0-0 draw.

The results left them top of the table going into this game and it put them in good stead to potentially go on and become Premier League champions come the end of the season.

It wasn’t too long ago that these two sides faced one another. The FA Cup Quarter Final just a few weeks ago was filled with drama and plenty of goals. A late goal from Amad Diallo saw Man United come out 4-3 victors booking their place in the Semi Finals. Something they will want a repeat of on Sunday.

Liverpool also failed to win in the reverse fixture at Anfield meaning they haven’t beaten United since that 7-0 thrashing in March last season. They also haven’t won at Old Trafford in a few years now, last picking up a win there in October 2021, beating the Red Devils 5-0 in that game.

This game clearly tends to provide a lot of goals.

Manchester United were dealt three new injury blows this week. And they all just so happen to be centre defenders. Victor Lindelof picked up a hamstring injury against Brentford, Lisandro Martinez was injured yet again in training this week and Raphael Varane has now withdrawn from the United squad due to facing concussion symptoms. All three will be unavailable for this fixture.

The home side will also remain without Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial and Jonny Evans in this game with injuries being a major issue for them this year more than any other.

Liverpool’s injury list is just as long. They are also missing some key players. Thaigo, Allison, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip and Ryan Gravenberch all remain out for this game.

However it isn’t all bad news as Curtis Jones and Andrew Robertson could make returns on the weekend.

This is bound to be an exciting game with three points being more valuable than ever for both sides. And considering this game is a huge derby match both teams will surely do whatever it takes to get that.

Liverpool certainly need a win more than anyone else in this game as they fight for the title so we would expect a Liverpool win. But as the FA Cup fixture just a few weeks ago proved anything can happen when these two sides play one another. United could just as easily sneak it.
