Stags Leading Race for Tottenham Starlet

League One side Mansfield Town are the leading club in the race to sign highly-rated Tottenham youngster George Abbott on loan until the end of the season, as reported by Alasdair Gold.

The dynamic 20-year-old midfielder is a hot prospect in North London, and was recalled loan with Wycombe Wanderers at the start of the January transfer window having only made six League One starts for the Chairboys amidst what was supposed to be a season-long loan.

Nigel Clough is looking into a move for a proactive, mobile midfielder to go alongside Louis Reed in the Stags' engine room, and Abbott fits the bill perfectly for the Nottinghamshire-based side.

Abbott Set for Stags Move

His move to Mansfield will be one that tugs on the heartstrings of Notts County fans - the Tottenham prospect enjoyed an amazing campaign in League Two with the Magpies last season, scoring five and assisting six from 42 fourth-tier showings as well as winning the EFL Goal of the Season award, and would be heading temporarily to Notts' biggest local rivals.

However, it is this season that saw Abbott catch the eye of many clubs in the EFL over the summer, with Wycombe being his eventual destination. Consistent playing time was a struggle for him to find under Michael Duff, however, and the 20-year-old was brought back to North London at the start of the winter window with it being understood for some time that Spurs were looking to send him back out, preferably to a club able to offer him more guaranteed minutes.

Nigel Clough has made three moves already in this January window, procuring the arrivals of midfielder Jon Russell on loan from Barnsley as well as the permanent signing of Victor Adeboyejo from Bolton Wanderers. Furthermore, they already have one Spurs talent on their books, having also brought in 19-year-old forward Oliver Irow from the Lilywhites in the opening weeks of the window on loan. He made a hot start to life at Field Mill, scoring a debut brace from the bench in a 3-0 win over Port Vale.

So though Mansfield have been active, the loss of Nottingham Forest loanee Jamie McDonell to Oxford United has been a stinging blow for the Stags. More reinforcements are a neccesity for Nigel Clough today, and a move for Abbott is expected to be closed before the transfer window does at 7pm.
