Matthijs de Ligt Hooked at Half Time for The Netherlands
Following his move to Manchester United from Bayern Munich, Matthijs de Ligt was handed two successive starts for the Netherlands. In a position that’s heavily contested, with Van Djik and Nathan Ake just some of the options Ronald Koeman has at his disposal, this was a chance to prove his ability for his country.
His first game against Bosnia & Herzegovina did not go to plan, and despite getting away with a 5-3 win, De Ligt had a poor showing. The Dutchman produced a poor error leading to goal, but his bad performance was hidden by fellow United man Joshua Zirkzee, who’s goal and assist just topped a fantastic performance.
The defender used an expletive when asked to describe his performance.
De Ligt was given another chance against Germany, and things looked positive for The Netherlands when Tijjani Reijnders gave them the lead in the second minute. However, De Ligt was hooked at half time, following another sloppy error leading to Germany’s equaliser.

When asked by Sky Sports why he substituted De Ligt at Half time, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman responded: “Of Course I would rather have kept Matthijs de Ligt on the pitch.”
He continued: “It just looks like he is now in a period where all his mistakes are being punished.”
I don’t think it’s quite time for Manchester United fans to start panicking about De Ligt.
Koeman’s comments suggest he still has confidence in De Ligt’s ability, despite his stream of errors. Perhaps it’s just a bad week for the Dutchman, and given his experience at the top level at such a young age, I’d back the defender to get over this period.
